Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

Year 10 Lizzie Wagner Career Worksop

Our school is bursting with pride about the amazing Year 10 2017. On Friday, 26 May, they attended the what has become tradition - 'Lizzie Wagner' presentation.

Upon arriving I saw 38 young adults that were so engaged in the program. The effort they had taken to dress for the corporate world was absolutely fantastic. The conversations during the day and the participation impressed Ms Wagner. Where she told me that "they were the best group she had worked with at our school". Upon reflection Friday afternoon, Ms Pholi did not have enough words to describe how proud, excited and thrilled she was feeling for these wonderful young adults.

Universities Admissions Centre Information Evening

An information evening will be held on Tuesday 21 March from 6-7pm in the school's library. An officer from the Universities Admissions Centre will be on hand to outline the HSC ATAR and how to apply for university entry and well as choosing the correct subject for senior years.

This evening is directed to students in year 10 to Year 12, however other students and parents are more than welcome to come along.

School Drive Subsidy

Parents and guardians who live farm from school can apply for the School Drive Subsidy. This new scheme has replaced the Private Vehicle Conveyance (PVC) subsidy.

Swimming Carnival to go ahead

The swimming carnival will go ahead today at the Tumbarumba Swimming Pool. So we will see you there in your sports house colours and ready for a fun filled day of swimming.

A risk assessment has been carried out and buses are on standby to transport students to school if the carnival has to be abandoned.

Welcome back.

We hope that you had a relaxing school break. Term 1 has started wonderfully and the students have settled in well. Great to see everyone back.

Our first event for the year is the Swimming Carnival which will be held on Monday 6 February at the Tumbarumba Swimming Pool. The weather forecast is for 20-40mm with thunderstorms. If for any reason we have to change the date, it will be advised through the School App and the Facebook page.

School Trip Subsidy Changes

From 20 December 2016, the Private Vehicle Conveyance (PVC) subsidy will be progressively phased out and replaced with the new School Drive Subsidy.

If you are a parent or guardian currently receiving the PVC subsidy, you can choose to stay on it or switch to the new School Drive Subsidy.

Year 11 students shine

Congratulations are extended to Tyler Wooden and Callum Wilson, both year 11 students, who have excelled at two recent events.

Tyler travelled to Junee High School where he was a recipient of a Victor Chang Excellence in Science Award. Tyler was the first successful nomination for this award from this school.

Callum travelled to NSW Parliament House to be involved in the Constitutional Convention. This involved 150 students from throughout the state involved in discussions of referendums and plebiscites.

The school community applauds these two dedicated students and looks forward to what is in store for both of them.

Trade Skills Centre Opened

The official opening of the Trade Skills Centre was held on Tuesday 25 October at 5pm.

Former Principal, Mrs Sheila Ayliffe, was invited to undertake the cutting of the ribbon and undertake the official opening of the Centre. Mrs Ayliffe initially applied for funding to refurbish the metal work room as early as 2007. Mrs Ayliffe saw the need for students to have the opportunity to work towards a qualification whilst at school.

In her speech, Mrs Ayliffe outlined what was involved in this undertaking and pointed out that the name of the Centre had in fact changed a number of times. She was excited to see what had been achieved and was proud to have been involved in the initial undertaking.

Principal, Mrs Fiona Jackson, also thanked others that were involved in seeing this project to fruition, presenting certificates to Mrs Ayliffe, Mr David Crelley and Mr Joe Powell.

After the formalities were completed those present took a tour of the new facilities where state of the art equipment is now available for the school's students to use.

Army Careers Day 12 November

The Army Logistic Training Centre will be holding a Careers Day on Saturday 12 November from 10am to 3pm at South Bandiana, Victoria. The event is free.

You will see practical demonstrations of Army trades, including electrical and mechanical engineering, medical and driver careers plus all of the administrative and logistic trades.

What you will see: Armoured vehicles. The Army's newest up-armoured wheeled vehicles, weapons and ammunition displays as well as a tour of the Army Medical training facilities.

You can also visit the Defence Force Recruiting stand and speak with a current serving member to ask questions about a career in the Australian Army.

How to get there: Due to base access restrictions, visitors are requested to park in the Bandiana Area Theatre car-park where buses will be available to take you into the careers Day venue. Enter the car park from the Murray Valley Highway, onto ANZAC Parade (near the Blazing Stump Hotel).

Tumbarumba High in top 15

Tumbarumba High School is in the top 15 public schools within the region for NAPLAN results.

According to a recent article in the Wagga Daily Advertiser, the best performing secondary schools were some of the smallest in the area.

NAPLAN is the an annual national assessment for students in years 7 and 9.

Our students and teachers are to be congratulated on these results.

Opening of Trade Skill Centre

Our School in 2015 was successful in being granted funding for an upgrade of the Metalwork room. Work started in the middle of last year, with completion of the Trade Skill Centre early this year.

The grand opening of the Trade Skill Centre will take place on Tuesday 25 October at 5pm. An invitation is extended to the community to attend this opening. This will be followed by light refreshments and a tour of the facility.

This event will run for approximately one hour. To help with catering arrangements please contact the school on 69482500 indicating your intentions to attend.

Careers Day - Batlow Technology School

Batlow Technology School is hosting a special careers day for students in year 9 and 10 on Tuesday 15 November, 2016.

The day will provide an occasion for students to gain information about employment opportunities in the local area and beyond. Students will have time to speak to people at the various stalls.

It will also include 5 sessions for groups of students to attend at which a presentation on employment potential and careers pathways within the specific organisations will be given.

Farewell Year 12

In their final week at Tumbarumba High School, the year 12 students have been busy with a number of activities.

A slave auction was held last Friday, where the Year 12 students were auctioned off. Whilst a little timid at first, the school and "slaves" soon got involved and the bidding got very intense and a massive $750.00 was raised for a local charity. The "slaves" then had to do their purchaser's bidding the next day for 2 hours. A number of staff and students cars were cleaned, whilst other students were busy shifting gear for teachers.

Year 12 invited year 5 and 6 students from Tumbarumba Public school to the school to participate in sporting activities. This was also an opportunity for the public school students to learn the "lay of the land" of our school.

Wednesday saw the traditional Year 12 versus staff volleyball game. The game was very competitive, with lots friendly rivalry. Whilst the staff team carried years of experience, the younger and fitter Year 12 students were victorious (actually it was an overwhelming win). Congratulations!

Thursday evening will be the Year 12 Farewell disco. The theme for the disco is "True Aussie". Disco commences at 7pm, $5 entry fee and a canteen will be available. A DJ will be there to rock the MPC. This should be a great night and a chance to say goodbye to Year 12 in a more informal environment.

Friday 22 September will sadly be Year 12's last day of High School. 13 years of school education will come to an end. It will be an early start with breakfast being cooked by chef Derek Smith at school for the students and staff. A formal assembly will commence in the MPC at 10.15 am. Parents and family of Year 12 students have been invited to this special occasion. This will be followed by a morning tea held in the Library.

The school would like to take this opportunity of wishing year 12 all the best for their upcoming HSC examinations and all the best for their future endeavours and careers. The school will miss you.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly

The final assembly for year 12 will be held on Friday 23 September, commencing at 10.15am. Parents, carers and family of the Year 12 students have been invited to attend this very special ceremony. After the assembly morning tea will be held in the Library.

Year 12 will be undertaking a number of activities throughout their last week at school, including a visit to the Tumbarumba Public School, the infamous Staff Vs Year 12 students volleyball and a farewell disco.

This year we are working towards achieving the priorities announced by the Premier to raise the percentage of students in the top bands in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

VALID Test for Year 8 &10

The Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development (VALID) test will be held on the following dates:-

Year 10 - Thursday 1 September

Year 8 - Between Wednesday 2 November and Friday 11 November 2016.

VALID Science contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are grouped around real world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science years K-10 syllabus.

Students will be tested on:-

* knowledge and understanding of science

* understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation

* ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically

* ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

Students will be completing VALID on a computer at school so will be required to bring headphones or earbuds that will plug in to a school computer.

If your child requires special consideration please contact the school as soon as possible to discuss this.

Results of the test will be available during Term 1 in 2017. A personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers to describe the science knowledge and skills demonstrated by the student in the test.

Yellow Day 26 August

Former Students

It is always great to hear how former students of Tumbarumba High School are going and what they are now achieving in the wider world.

Two of our former students, Daniel Willis and Brock Shore, are finalists in the GTES Apprentice and Trainee Awards. The finals for these awards are being held Friday 19 August in Wagga Wagga.

Both Brock and Daniel are employees with Snowy Valleys Council; Brock being a fourth year apprentice mechanic and Daniel a third year apprentice mechanic. Daniel started his career with Snowy Valleys Council through the school based apprenticeship scheme.

Both young men are to be congratulated on their commitment to their jobs. To get into the finals is a huge achievement and the school community wishes both all the best for not only the awards ceremony, but their future careers.

The school also had the opportunity to be addressed by former School Captain, Anna Eggleton, at the Education Week assembly. Anna gave an inspiring speech on what she has been doing since leaving Tumbarumba High School. This speech can be found attached to the last newsletter which is also on the website. Thank you Anna for making the time to come and inspire our students.

Dance Performers win Spirit of Wakakirri Award

Congratulations to our Wakakirri Performers who did an magnificent performance last night at NIDA in Sydney.

The performers were presented with the Spirit of Wakakirri Award. The major awards are still to be announced, so fingers crossed.

The performers and the group that handled all the behind the scenes are to be congratulated on all their hard work. A special mention must go to Mrs Jackson for her huge effort in organising this event.

Not long now and our performers will be heading to Sydney to participate in Wakakirri at NIDA.

The school was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the performance at its Education Week assembly last Thursday.

Good luck to our performers. Lots of hard work both behind the scenes and with rehearsals has taken place over the past few months. There certainly is a lot of excitement in the school as last minute rehearsals take place today.

The performers will be leaving from the school at 6.30 am Tuesday 9 August and will be performing that evening.

The community will be able to vote for the school so watch this space for details in relation to how you can vote.

Education Week Assembly

Happy Education Week!

This year's theme is: Shared Stories, Better Learning, Stronger Communities.

As part of the school's celebrations, a special assembly will be held Thursday 4 August at 11.40 am in the MPC.

Our students will be showcasing their talents with musical items and the Wakakirri Dancers will be performing their routine for the competition to be held in Sydney next week.

Former student, Anna Eggleton, will be addressing the assembly on her exciting time as an exchange student to Japan.

A presentation from the CWA will also be taking place to students who participated in their writing competition.

Prior to the Assembly, parents and carers are warmly invited to attend a morning tea (prepared by our students) the Library from 11.20 am to 11.40 am.

Paper Plane Competition

As part of National Science Week, THS are running a Paper Plane Competition for Year 7-10 on Monday 8th August. To qualify for the regional competition students need to throw further than 18m. Planes must be made on the day.

Year 5 & 6 from TPS are also attending on the day.

School Cross Country

The school's cross country will be held this Friday (6 May).

Periods 1, 2 and recess are as normal. Students will then walk to the Golf Club. The SRC will be holding a barbecue lunch and healthy snacks will be available at a small cost. Students will return to school in time for buses.

Students are to wear appropriate athletic attire in house colours.

Don't forget to bring plenty of water and required medication.

Nathan Hindmarsh Visit

The school was most fortunate enough to have Nathan Hindmarsh visit on Wednesday 27 April from. Tumbarumba Public also joined the High School for this visit.

Nathan addressed our students on the NRL's "Tackling Bullying" program which is being delivered across NSW. This address was well received by the students and Nathan had a great rapport with all and was mobbed when asked if anyone wanted anything signed.

Unfortunately Nathan had a very tight schedule and all too soon had to leave our school.

By now parents and carers should have received, via post, a letter of invitation to attend the Parent/Teacher information session on Tuesday 5 April from 3.30pm to 6.00pm in the School's Library. Year 7 parents will also have received an interim report with this letter.

A booking form is on the back of this letter and students are requested to bring this to school and book an interview time with their relevant teachers.

Students are more than welcome to attend these interviews and can also bring with them samples of their work to back up their evaluation and form the basis of discussions about their progress. This three way conference will allow shared communication to assist with your child's success in their learning.

Our School Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 24 March. A back up date of Thursday 31 March has been set down in case the weather is not favourable.

Students are required to meet at the Tumbarumba Sports Ground at 8.45 am for a 9 am start. Students will be dismissed from the venue at 3.20pm. The 1500m races will be run at 8.30 am. Any students wishing to compete in these events need to be at the venue at 8.20 am.

Parents, friends and family are most welcome to come along. We would love to see as many people as possible.

School buses will drop off and pick up from the venue.

Students should wear house colours. (Parks - blue, Deakin - yellow, Hughes - red, Barton - green) Sport uniform and athletic attire are all suitable. Please remember to bring a hat and sunscreen, food, plus lots of water. Energy drinks are not acceptable.

The SRC will run a healthy canteen between 10 am and 2pm. This includes fruit, juice and a sausage sizzle.

Students are not allowed to leave the venue for any reason unless accompanied by a parent or carer and with the permission of Mr Harris.

It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school's website by selecting $ Make a payment.

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, uniform, excursions, calculators and other sales to students. There is also a category called Other to cover items not covered in the previous headings. Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

The student's name, and class and reference number OR
The student's name, and date of birth.

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and invoice number. These are not used at our school, please leave blank.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child's account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

It's been a busy sporting term here at Tumbarumba High.

We started off with the Swimming Carnival, and then we had a great team represent the school at Zone Swimming. From that 3 students, Charlie Bergin, Piper McKinnon and Benjamin Chaffey, qualified for the Regional Carnival in Leeton.

Our age champions for Tumbarumba High School are:

Congratulations to all our participants. Thank you also to the wonderful parents who transported their children to these events. Your time, support and assistance is very much appreciated.

Our students have also participated in the NRL Backyard League Coaching Clinic, and cricket.

Our next major sporting event will be the Athletics Carnival which will be held on Thursday 24 March at the Sportsground.

Zone Athletics - Friday 13 May in Temora

Zone Cross country - Friday 27 May in Murrumburrah.

It is fantastic to see our students wearing the sports uniform during PDHPE and sports lessons. Our sports uniform is a maroon polo shirt and black shorts or track pants. Black tights are acceptable for practical sport lessons only. They are not considered school uniform so should not be worn outside these practical lessons.

Tell Them From Me Survey

Students have been given a letter of information and consent form for parents and carers to take part in the "Tell Them From Me" student survey. This letter is attached.

The survey will provide valuable information about what students think about school life, their engagement with the school and the ways that teachers interact with them. Students will not be able to be identified. The survey will be on-line and will take approximately 30 minutes and will be carried out at school.

Participating in the survey is voluntary. Students will not take part if the non-consent form (which is attached to the letter) is completed and returned to the school. Students can stop the survey at any time and also leave questions blank should they wish to do so.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey please complete the non-consent form and return it to the school office by Tuesday 15 March 2016.

Swimming Carnival

The school's annual swimming carnival will be held on Monday 15 February at the Tumbarumba Swimming Pool, Lauder Street, commencing at at 8.45 am for a 9 am roll marking. The event will finish at approximately 3pm. School buses will drop off and pick up from the swimming pool.

Parents and friends are more than welcome to come along and support our swimmers. There will be the famous parent/teacher versus student relay at the end of the day.

Students are encouraged to wear their House colours, which are:

Barton: Green

Parkes: Blue

Hughes: Red

Deakin: Yellow

Students are also to bring suitable swimming attire, towel, adequate food and water and don't forget the sunscreen. The SRC will be cooking a sausage sizzle for lunch.

The Zone Swimming Carnival will then be held on Friday 19 February in Tumut. If students qualify they will be given a note on Tuesday. The cost of this will be $15 (for transport), which is payable to the Front Office by Thursday 18 February. Transport to Tumut will be by mini bus, which can only transport 11 students. We will need to rely on parent transport as well. The school requires a copy of registration, comprehensive insurance and licence details if you transport students other than your own.

Movember Update

We would like to sincerely thank everybody who donated to the Movember charity during the month of November. It was really pleasing to see such a small school make such a large impact on raising awareness on men's health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and physical inactivity. The school raised over $1200 dollars.

The winning year who raised the most will be announced at this week's assembly.

The main event for the month was to see two male teachers battle it out over a 40m sprint, in the race that stopped the school. The participating Mo-Bros were Mr Smith and Mr Powell. Mr Powell started strong and looked the winner but he faded just before the line to be pipped at the post by a fast finishing Mr Smith.

It was brilliant to see the whole school being so enthusiastic and supporting such an important event. Next year?'s November planning has already started and is looking promising

Movember comes to an end

Movember is over. This month of fund-raising and awareness has been a huge success. There has been lots of fierce competition between fellow MoBros and our students have banded together for such a worthwhile cause. Money is still rolling in, so a final tally is still be undertaken. Well done Tumbarumba High.

Unfortunately our MoBros were took quick in getting rid of their moustaches so the photo opportunity was lost.

The biggest entertainment for the month was held on the last day of the month - the race that stopped a school, between Mr Powell and Mr Smith. Both were carrying injuries prior to the race, but it certainly didn't stop their enthusiasm (or should we say competitiveness). Mr Powell led all the way but unfortunately was pipped at the post by Mr Smith. Maybe it was the new shoes that Mr Smith brought especially for the occasion.

It is hoped that we may be able to gather a few more photos of the fabulous moustaches that were grown.

Compressed Curriculum Review

Tumbarumba High School is currently organising a review of the compressed curriculum in stage 6. As part of this review all parents are invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday 9 December at 7pm in the Science Conference room to gain information about the review and to participate in the determination of questions to be used in the parental survey.

The survey will be anonymous and will be completed online. We appreciate your input and we look forward to seeing you there.

VALID Science 8 2015

The Validation of Assessment 4 Learning and Individual Development (VALID) test for Year 8 students will be held between Monday 9 November 2015.

The test takes approximately 80 minutes. It is an interactive multimedia test completed on a computer, therefore students are required to bring earphones/earbuds to complete the test.

VALID Science 8 contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are grouped around world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science years K-10 syllabus. Students will be tested on their:

Knowledge and understanding of science.

Understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation.

Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically.

Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

Students will also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values.

Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2016. Information about each student is treated confidentially and held securely. A personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers.

The school once again dressed up for the Melbourne Cup and had some very loud Melbourne Cup Events. Thank you to the PDHPE and Maths staff for co-ordinating these activities.

As is the tradition, the school had their very own "Fashion on the Field". It was wonderful to see so many students "frocking" up for this event. The school then watched the race in the Library.

School Rollover

The new school year (rollover) will commence on Monday 9 November 2015.

This means that students in year 7 will commence year 8, year 8 will commence year 9, year 10 will go into Year 11 and of course year 11 will commence their Year 12 studies.

Students are requested to have their new subject books ready for commencement on 9 November.

The new timetable will be given to students in the next couple of days.

5 male staff members have stepped up to the plate and will be growing, or endeavouring to grow a moustache during "Movember" to raise awareness of mens' health issues.

Each year group has been assigned a teacher:

The year group, who on average (per student), raises the most money during "Movember" will be rewarded with a free barbecue lunch and movie. An Ice Forum will be held in Tumbarumba on Thursday 15 October at 7.00 pm in the MPC.

This Forum is to inform and educate the community on the drug Ice. Speakers will include David Cottee (Albury Crime Unit), Katrina Sanderson (drug and alcohol) and Tony Hoang (former dealer, addict and gang member from Cabramatta who is now a youth worker, drug educator, pastor and school chaplain).

The school is fortunate enough to have Tony Hoang address the school students on Thursday.

Any parent wishing to come along to this smaller forum at the school, it will commence at 12.30pm. Please contact the school if you wish to attend.

Students undertake First Aid Course

Last week a number of students from years 9, 10 and 12 undertook a first aid course at the school.

These students are now trained in CPR, Basic Emergency Life Support, Provide First Aid and Apply First Aid.

These students are to be commended in stepping up and training in this. The students now feel empowered that if they come across an emergency that they will be able to assist and may well save a life.

The training was provided by Pudman Training Group delivered under a Regional Traning Organisation partnership with Allens Training.

Best in Public Speaking at Wakakirri

Our dancers, accompanied by Miss Grimm and Mrs Ruth Blackmore left Tumbarumba in the very early hours of Friday morning to travel to NIDA in Sydney to perform at Wakakirri. This is the second year that our dancers have performed at NIDA.

Many hours of preparation have been put into this performance. The students choreographed the dance as well as designed costumes and make up. Congratulations must be extended to these students for their commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm.

We are eagerly awaiting overall results, so watch this space.

Taste of TAFE

Year 12 Early Entry to University

All year 12 students applying to go to University next year must apply online through the University Admissions Centre (UAC) website. The UAC website opens Wednesday 5 August.

Students can submit up to 9 preferences for courses and universities and this must be completed by 30 September 2015 or late fees will apply.

Year 12 students interested in applying for university need to be researching individual university websites for Early Entry Programs.

Congratulations to the following students on their recent sporting achievements:

Lily Murphy - finished a fantastic 13th out of 40 girls in the skiing championships at Perisher.

Asheleigh Dodwell - currently competing in a zone polo cross competition. Good luck Asheleigh.

The school had a great group of students competing at the Regional Athletics Carnival held in Albury on Friday 31 July. Congratulations to all involved on their participation and sportsmanship.

Craig Grady received 1st in the 15 years triple jump. Tamikah Hoffman came second in the 17+ 100 m running event and Brianna McAuliffe came 2nd in the 15 years 800m running event.

Dancers to Perform at Wakakirri

Our enthusiastic and excited dancers will make the big trip to Sydney in the early hours of Friday morning to participate in the Wakakirri performance at NIDA.

A team of 20 students have been rehearsing and fine tuning their dance routine over the past weeks and are getting very excited as the event gets closer.

This year the dancers will be accompanied by Miss Grimm who is very excited to be involved this year. Unfortunately Mrs Jackson is unable to attend due to Principal commitments. Mrs Jackson has been busily organising the event from behind the scenes to ensure that all will go smoothly.

This group of dancers are to be congratulated as they have choreographed the dance, designed the costumes and will be doing hair and make-up on the day. A great team effort.

The school and its community wish the group all the best and know that they will do the school proud.

Absentee Notes and Change of Details

Parents and Carers are now able to forward change of details and absentee notes via the Skoolbag App.

This is a very quick and easy process. Once you have logged into the school app, go to e-forms and choose either absentee note or change of details and complete the form.

Please ensure that you are using Internet Explorer version 10 and make sure you have the most recent version of the Skoolbag App (as it requires to be updated from time to time).

First Aid Course

Trade Skills Centre

Paris and Alex return from AFL Championships

Brother and Sister duo, Alex and Paris Crelley have returned from representing the Riverina in the All Schools AFL championships in Sydney.

Paris played in the under 16 girls team against a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges team and a team from all Sydney public schools. Riverina won their first game against the public schools. Unfortunately they narrowly lost to the combined catholic colleges team. Congratulations are extended to Paris for her enthusiasm and sportsmanship whilst competing.

Alex represented the Riverina South West in the under 15 boys AFL Championships. This team reached the grand final undefeated, beating the South coast, Riverina-Murray, Sydney and the Combined Catholic Colleges team. Unfortunately they did not win the Grand Final.

Alex is to be congratulated on being selected in the Combined High Schools Merit team. Alex narrowly missed out on selection in the NSW All Schools team.

Congratulations are extended to both Alex and Paris for their involvement in the AFL Championships.

Success at Zone Cross Country

Harvesting Simulators

The school was indeed fortunate enough to have the Forestry Industry Council visit the school and bring their harvesting and haulage simulators for interested students to experience what it is like to operate a harvester and a forwarder.

This is particularly relevant to our students given the large forestry industry in our area.

Students were very enthusiastic about this and were fortunate enough that the officer from the Forestry Industry Council extended his stay.

Year 10 students have the fantastic opportunity to participate in the Lizzie Wagner Professional Development Day this Friday (May 22) at the Tumbarumba Community Church, commencing at 8.45 am.

Students are required to wear formal attire. The school will have blazers, shirts and ties to borrow if required.

Students are to bring a pen and paper. They do not have to bring their recently prepared resume.

Morning tea will be provided. There is an opportunity to go down the street for lunch. However, they must be back on time. Students can bring their own lunch if so desired.

Zone Athletics Carnival

Just a reminder that the Zone Athletics Carnival is on Friday 8 May at Temora. The bus will be departing from the school at 6.30 am and will return at approximately 4.30 pm. Full sport uniform is to be worn and other athletics attire to be brought along.

Year 10 students have a number of exciting activities coming up.

Year 10 Education Program:

Year 10 students will have the opportunity to prepare themselves for future employment by participating in a Career Education program that will increase their confidence in areas such as;

Professional presentation and etiquette

Effective communication

Prepare a comprehensive job application cover letter and resume

Job interview techniques.

This program will be delivered over a period of weeks from 12 May to 5 June.

The program begins on 12 May with a job cover letter and resume session. Students are required to find a suitable job advertisement that they can apply for in their formal mock interview, which will be held on 5 June. Once students have created their resume it will be a living document that students can adapt and change to suit their future employment needs.

The second session will the Lizzie Wagner Professional Presentation Workshop. This will be held on 22 May at the Tumbarumba Community Church from 8.45 am until 3.00pm for boys and 5.00pm for girls.

This courses includes corporate grooming, deportment and presentation, social etiquette and communication and public speaking along with motivation and self confidence.

The girls will participate in a professional presentation make-up session with Lizzie from 3-5pm.

The final session will involve the students attending a Mock Interview to be held at the Tumbarumba Community Church on 5 June from 8.45am to 3.00pm.

The school is fortunate enough to obtain the services of local business people to form interview panels to not only interview the students but also give valuable feedback and take on a mentoring role.

The total cost of the program is $30.00. This has been heavily subsidised by the school. This is an incredible opportunity for our students.

Anzac Ceremony

The school had a fantastic amount of students and staff participating in the Centenary celebrations of Anzac Day. Thank you to all those involved.

It was great to see our students proudly wearing their uniform and the School Captains, along with the School Representative Council looked magnificent in the formal school attire.

The service was indeed fortunate that the weather held, although black clouds filled the sky and the sound of thunder could be heard in the distance.

The school would like to also thank the Tumbarumba RSL for generously supplying an Anzac badge to each student and staff member.

World's Greatest Shave

Our students and staff were heavily involved in fund raising for the World's Greatest Shave, with a considerable amount of money raised for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Some of our students and teachers stepped up to the plate and got their hair shaved whilst other students had their long hair shortened. The school congratulates these members of the school for stepping out of their comfort zone and doing this for a worthy cause. There are lots of beanies being worn now that the weather has cooled down.

The quadrangle was a hive of activity for this event, with parents and friends also joining in with the shaving of heads.

Thanks are extended to Vanessa McGrath for the organisation of this and also to Charelle Horsley, our hairdresser, overseeing the hair removal.

It is heartening to see our students being involved more and more with fundraising for charities.

The school will be holding a Multi-Cultural day on Thursday 2 April 2015. This day has been organised by the SRC, Youth Council and the Interact Club.

Students are encouraged to dress in international costumes.

During lunch there will be stalls in the MPC where students can try food from different countries and learn a bit about its culture. There will also be music and costumes. There will also be a dance performance and games such as Bocce, Foosball, Pin the Sombrero on the Mexican and Coils will be played. There will also be an Easter Egg hunt to conclude the activities.

This will be a great way to end the school term.

Tumbarumba and Jingellic Shows

Congratulations to our Cattle Team students for their participation in both the Tumbarumba and Jingellic Shows, with lots of prizes and ribbons being won.

The cattle team had been for preparing for both shows for weeks prior to the shows and their hard work paid off. Students, along with Ms Coleman were up early attending to the cattle each day in preparation for the events.

The school was a scene of activity on the eve of the Shows with lots of washing and pampering of the cattle.

The school was also very successful in the poultry section of the Tumbarumba Show, with a number of first and second prizes. Again lots of preparation was undertaken prior to the event and the poultry were washed and preened to look their very best.

A huge thank you is extended to Ms Coleman and her team for all their hard work and commitment.

P&C Annual General Meeting

Just a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Tumbarumba High School's P&C Committee will be held tonight at 7.30 pm in the Conference Room in the Science Building. The ordinary meeting will then take place after the AGM.

New Cricket Nets

Construction of the new cricket nets has commenced, with the demolition of the old cricket nets.

The old nets will be replaced with new concrete slabs, posts, nets and artificial turf. Our cricket nets have been somewhat tired, so this will be a vast improvement for our cricket players.

It is a big investment for our school and will not only provide benefits to our students, but also to the community.

The school would like to thank the Tumbarumba District Junior Cricket Association for their generous donation of $2000.00 towards this facility.

Although it is the end of the cricket season, it is hoped that students will be able to get some time in at the nets before winter sets in.

Payments can now be paid online

Parents are able to make online payments to the school using the secure payment page hosted by Westpac. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the School's website by selecting $ Make a Payment tab. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card.

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, uniform, excursions, calculators and other sales to students.

A flyer detailing this new system was attached to invoices recently forwarded to parents for school fees.

This is a wonderful system enabling parents to pay at their convenience at any time of the day or night.

With a new school year comes new staff.

Mrs Edwards (Maths) has commenced teaching at Orange High School. Miss Dunemann will be teaching maths.

Mrs Beattie will soon commence maternity leave. The school would like to welcome Ms Troncone.

Ms Guthrie is on a teacher exchange to Campbelltown Performing Arts High School. Ms Sturgess has commenced with our school for the year duration.

Mr Laing is on leave for the first term and Mrs Reed has commenced in the Teaching and Learning staff room. Mr Sowter is Acting Head Teacher for Teaching and Learning.

Welcome to our new teachers.

With the changes that have occurred the school will require a new timetable. This is in the process of being completed and it is hoped will be up and running in the next few weeks.

Paris' Cricket Achievements

The school congratulates Paris Crelley on her current cricket achievements. Paris has just returned from playing in the under 15 state championships where she represented the Riverina.

The following is an excerpt from Paris:-

"Last week I was lucky enough to head up to Sydney to play cricket as part of the Academy XI female team at the Under 15 National Championship. Academy XI was 1 of 2 NSW teams representing the state.

In our first game 2 weeks ago, we beat Western Australia by a substantial amount. For the next 6 days we faced some very strong competition, such as: NSW Metropolitan, South Australia, Tasmania and we were close against ACT/Country, when they overtook our score in the last over and the Victorian team only losing by 1 run. We ended up 7^thin the whole competition, beating Western Australia again in the final.

The experience was amazing, meeting new friends, playing some really strong teams and receiving quality coaching. However, I didn't enjoy the mandatory ice baths that we had to do at the end of every game!"

Presentation Night

The school's Presentation Night will be held on Monday 15 December commencing at 7.30pm in the MPC.

All students are reminded that full school uniform is to be worn and that students are required to be seated 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the night.

Parents, family and community members are invited to attend and help celebrate our students achievements.

So that students will be able to come in uniform, Monday 15 will be a mufti day.

The School Photos will be taken on Friday 6 February, 2015.

Photo envelopes will be forwarded to the school in the first week back in 2015 and will given to students prior to the day.

Photo orders and payment can be made on-line with MSP Photographers as well as payment by cash. Details are located on the photo envelope. Cheques will not be accepted.

Completed envelopes are to be given to the photographer on the day. They are not to be given to the Front Office.

There will also be an opportunity for siblings to have their photo taken. A "family envelope" is required to be completed and these will be available from the Front Office.

High Achievers Reception UNSW

Earlier this year, Callum Wilson, entered the University of NSW's International Competitions and Assessments for Schools in Writing.

These competitions are an independent skills-based assessment with a competition element. Subjects that students can enter comprise of English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing.

Over one million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition students from over 20 countries also participate.

In November, the school was advised that Callum had achieved a High Distinction in Writing, which is the top 1% of participants of NSW and consequently he was invited to a High Achievers Reception on Friday 28 November at the University of NSW.

The following is an excerpt from Callum:-

"On Friday 28 November, I, along with a guest, was invited to attend the University of New South Wales' High Achievers' reception. We arrived in Sydney at around 12.15pm and proceeded to the campus. We were greeted with a guided tour of the University, which they boasted had "the most steps of any university in Australia." There were many interesting stories told by the guide, such as the cow that got stuck at the top of one of the towers, and the crocodile that was "borrowed" from Taronga Zoo and placed in the lake.

After the tour, all students were requested to enter the ‘Scientia' building. We were given a UNSW thumb drive as a memento of the occasion. The reception then began. We were addressed by the Vice Chancellor of UNSW and lucky draw prizes were drawn. These prizes included Samsung tablets, iPads, and iPods. After this, we spoke to students from the different faculties in relation to their subjects. These faculties included Science, Business, Arts and Architecture. We were also told about what scholarship opportunities are available. All in all, it was a great day and I am considering studying at UNSW in the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school for allowing me to attend this reception. It was a memorable day."

National Cricket Titles for Paris

Following Paris Crelley's success at the NSW Country Under 15 Cricket Championships in October, she has been selected in the NSW Cricket Academy to contest the National Under 15 Girls Cricket Titles.

This will take placed over 7 days which commences 26 November in Richmond and Campbelltown. These will be full on days with matches of 40 overs most days.

Paris' cricket career commenced when she was in Primary School. She was part of the PSSA team that made it to final contentions 2 years in a row. Paris has also played in the local junior cricket team "Colts" for several years.

Paris is a wonderful ambassador for girls playing cricket and for the Tumbarumba High School. We wish Paris all the best with her latest achievement and we know that she will go further in her cricketing career.

Remembrance Day

Our school will again be involved in co-ordinating the Remembrance Day service at the Tumbarumba Cenotaph.

Students will be departing the school at 10.20 am and the service is expected to commence at 10.40 am, culminating in a minute's silence at 11.00 am. Students will then return to school at the conclusion of the service.

It would be appreciated if students could come to school in full school uniform.

All community members are invited to attend this significant ceremony.

New School Year Commences 10/11/14

The 2015 school year begins on Monday 10 November 2014. This is due to the implementation of a senior curriculum delivery which enables Stage 6 students to undertake just three courses in a 12 month period with the advantage of having to complete just three HSC exams in one year.

Parents and students are reminded to ensure all students have new books to begin their new courses. This will enable a smooth transition into the school year. A book list is set out below. This is an indication only and if students are unsure, they should check with their teachers.

Students Excel in their HSC

The Higher School Certificate results for 2013 have arrived and the students of Tumbarumba High School have excelled, with four different students making the NSW Distinguished Achievers List by achieving Band 6 results in their 2 Unit courses. This is the first time we have had four students achieve this honour since the new Higher School Certificate was introduced in 1999. Rayden Brice, Samuel Hibbard, James Grady and Kerryn Wake all achieved this distinction in a historic year of results for our school, the students and their teachers. In fact, it is the first Band 6 results our students have achieved in 2 Unit courses since 2007.

This year our Higher School Certificate students also achieved an amazing 22 Band 5 results compared to 8 in 2012. This year we have also seen 7 courses achieve above state average results compared to just 3 in 2012.

I am delighted to be able to announce that the DUX of Tumbarumba High School for 2013 is Kerryn Wake who achieved a raw ATAR of 83.95. Another three students also achieved ATAR's in the 70's capping off an outstanding set of results for all of our students.

The results our Higher School Certificate Students have achieved this year is a reflection of their dedication and persistence to their studies. They have proven to be tremendous role models and are incredibly deserving of the results they have achieved both as individuals and as a group.

This is a genuine sign of the progress our school and its students have made over the past few years. Congratulations to all students, parents and teachers who were responsible for these fantastic results.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly

Friday 19 September will be the last day for our Year 12 Students. This will be recognised by an assembly, to which parents and family members are invited to attend. The assembly will commence at 10.20 am and will be followed by morning tea for year 12 students, their guests and teachers.

We would like to wish our Year 12 all the best as they prepare for their Higher School Certificate examinations and for their future careers.

New Timetable to commence 10 November

On 10 November 2014 the school will "rollover" into its new timetable. This will mean that Year 11 will move into Year 12, Year 10 into Year 11 and Years 8 and 9 into Years 9 and 10. Students will require new books for their new subjects. Students undertaking practical courses are reminded that they are required to wear appropriate footwear for their practical subjects.

Year 7 will remain in stage 4. A transition program for year 6 students who will be attending this school in 2015 will run later in the term.

New Caledonia Trip

A very excited bunch of students and teachers have commenced their journey to New Caledonia. They met the 12.20 am XPT to Sydney on Wednesday morning and will be flying out of Sydney early Wednesday afternoon

The 10 students, ranging from year 7 to year 10 and 2 teachers will be immersing themselves in the culture of the area, practicing their French to make purchases, order food and make their way around the island. They will also be undertaking a number of French lessons whilst there.

This certainly is a fantastic opportunity for our students and we look forward to their stories when they return home next Thursday morning (3am at Wagga Wagga Railway Station)

Wakakirri Performers win Awards

Tumbarumba High Successful at Wakakirri Performance:

Early Monday morning, the school received word that they had won additional awards for their performance at Wakakirri, which was held at NIDA in Sydney on 6 August. These awards are "Best Projection" and "Best Cast and Ensemble" for NSW. This is indeed a huge achievement for a small school.

Deputy Principal, Mrs Fiona Jackson, who is also the Co-ordinator of the performers, was excited beyond words when she received notification of these awards. The school beat 13 other NSW schools, both public and private, for these awards.

Wakakirri is a national festival that celebrates learning via the creation and sharing of stories. Wakakirri is an aboriginal word meaning "to dance a story". The school's story was entitled "Bang Bang" which is a story of an explosion of emotions from violence to love. The performers explored these emotions through dance. This was the first year that the school has entered and it is encouraging to see the success that they have achieved.

It has been an awe inspiring event that proves that it is not only about the destination for the students, but the journey that they have been through to reach the actual performance of this dance. Countless hours of hard work have been put into this production by not only and the choreographers, the dancers, but the production team.

The performance received fantastic comments from the judges on the evening and it also won the "Best School in Public" off stage award on the evening.

There will be an award ceremony in Sydney this Thursday evening.

Volunteers required for 2015

This year the school was most fortunate to receive funding to supply a bus to transport our students to TAFE in Wagga Wagga every Thursday. The school was also very fortunate to have two parents voluntarily drive the bus once a month.

Unfortunately this funding will not be available in 2015. The most cost effective method of transporting our students will be to use the Bowling Club bus, with a voluntary driver from the community.

Consequently we are looking for expressions of interest from parents/carers or community members who would be interested in volunteering to be on a roster to drive the bus for our students in 2015.

This would involve a commitment to drive the bus from 11.30 am and return at approximately 7-7.30pm on a Thursday.

Interested persons would be required to undertake a full Police and Working Children check.

2015 School Captains Elected

These four students will be outstanding ambassadors for the school.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly

The school will hold a formal assembly on Friday 19 September 2014 to farewell the current Year 12. This will be held in the MPC commencing at 10.20 am, followed by morning tea in the library for year 12 students and their families.

This assembly will include presentation of certificates and prizes for first in course.

Year 12 students are required to wear full school uniform, not their senior jerseys. If any student is experiencing difficulty in meeting this requirement please see Mr Crelley or Miss Guthrie. Unfortunately those students not in correct uniform will be unable to participate in the assembly.

As Year 12 approaches the end of their schooling at Tumbarumba High School, there are a few matters that need to be considered and the school has a duty of care that students are aware of these matters.

Year 12 subjects will continue to have new work to cover after the trial exams. It is imperative that students attend school and continue to work to the best of their ability. Lessons will continue until Thursday 18 September.

School "muck-up" days are a thing of the past. The Department of Education and Communities will not tolerate this behaviour. Students are expected to comply with the rules and behavioural expectations of the school and the Department. Any student who breaches these rules will be punished in accordance with normal school procedures.

HSC Trial Exams

There will be no normal timetabled lessons during this time for senior students and students are requested to sign in and out at the front office and are to wear school uniform.

Dancers Awarded at Wakakirri

Congratulations to our dancers and their production crew on receiving the "Best in Public" award at Wakakirri, which was held on 6 August at NIDA in Sydney.

This was an awe inspiring event for our students and the school wishes to congratulate them on a fantastic effort. Congratulations are also extended to Mrs Jackson for her tireless efforts in overseeing the production. Word has it that preparations have already begun for next year's event.

Just a reminder that the school has Eftpos facilities. A $2.50 administrative fee is applicable on credit card payments.

The school also has its very own App. This is available for both iphone, iPad and Android users. This is a great communication tool and allows the school to communicate directly to both parents and students.

Dancers at Wakakirri

Early Wednesday 6 August our dancers, parents, teachers and our lighting and sound designers departed for Sydney to perform at Wakakirri.

Wakakirri, the Secondary Schools Challenge, is where students tell a story through dance theatre. The story has been created and choreographed by the students who will be competing for awards including individual, group, design and performance.

Our students, along with Mrs Jackson, have put countless hours into the preparation for this day and the school, along with the Tumbarumba community, wish them the very best of luck. Our students are very excited about competing in this event, which will be held at NIDA in Kensington.

Upon arrival our group will be welcomed and briefed on what the day entails and will then be escorted to their dressing area. Each school is allocated 30 minutes rehearsal time.

Show-time commences at 7.15 pm in front of a huge audience. So our dancers will be busily preparing for this prior to their turn on stage. After our performance 2 students will be interviewed by the show host.

At the conclusion of the live show an award ceremony will be held on stage. Our performers will then board their bus and head back to Tumbarumba, arriving at approximately 4am Thursday morning.

We know that this will be an awe inspiring experience for our students. Photos from the event will be uploaded at a later date.

Reach out Volunteer Program

Former student, Brin Hussell, will be travelling to South Africa next year to volunteer as part of the Reach Out Volunteer Program. Brin will be undertaking hands-on work with community projects as well as wildlife conservation.

Brin is currently fundraising for this and will be holding a disco at the Tumbarumba Golf Club on Saturday 16 August.

Under 13s from 5pm to 7pm and 13-18 year olds from 7.30 pm to 10.00pm. Entry is $5.

Private Vehicle Conveyance Subsidy

If you are required to transport your child to a bus stop or school, the Private Vehicle Conveyance (PVC) subsidy can provide twice a year payments to help you cover the expenses.

Applications are now available online at transport.nsw.gov.au/pvc. Applying online is quick and easy. Paper applications are available, however can take up to 6 weeks to be confirmed.

University Applications open 6 August

Students can submit up to 9 preferences for courses and universities and this must be done by 28 September 2014 or late fees apply.

School Assembly Thursday 7 August

Parents, family and members of the community are invited to attend the next whole school assembly which will be held Thursday 7 August in the school's MPC at 11.20 am.

The assembly will include musical and dance performances as well as presentation of certificates. Our dancers will in fact will have arrived back in the early hours of Thursday morning after performing at Wakakirri in Sydney, so will be keen to showcase their performance.

The school looks forward to as many parents and community members coming along to the assembly.

UC4 Yourself - Canberra University

22 students from Years 9 and 10, along with Miss Pholi and Mr Crelley had the opportunity to visit Canberra University as part of the University's Aspire Program on Wednesday 23 July.

Our students were met by the Aspire Program's mentors who worked with the students throughout the day. Students had the opportunity to visit the information booths which represented all the faculties on campus. Students also were able to attend a lesson and also toured one of the new residential facilities.

This fantastic opportunity was fully funded by the University of Canberra and allowed our students to familiarise themselves on what campus life is about.

Our students once again were fantastic ambassadors for our school and the community.

Trivia Night 1 August 2014

Year 12 will be holding a Trivia Night on Friday 1 August at the MPC commencing at 6.30pm.

This will be a fundraising event for year 12 to raise funds for the formal which will be held in November.

Come in groups or with your family. There will be a maximum of 10 people per table and it will be $10 per person. Please supply your own nibbles and tea/coffee/drinks will be available to purchase at the canteen.

Our HSC music students will be performing throughout the night.

Lucas Shore to compete at State Cross Country

Lucas Shore finished 6th at the Regional Cross Country held at Gundagai on 17 June.

This now means that Lucas will be representing the school at State level in July at Homebush.

All Schools AFL Carnival

The All-schools AFL carnival was held between Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 June in Wagga Wagga . The Carnival involved 9 teams from across NSW including one Combined Independent Schools (CIS) and two Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC)- North and South. The remainder of teams were comprised of Regional Public Schools.

Alex Crelley was fortunate to be selected in the Riverina South-West squad - with the unfortunate title of "Tip Turkeys".

They played a combined Sydney Team in their first game, going down by 9 points. Their second game on the Tuesday was against CCC North, a team that stretched from Sydney to the Queensland border. This was a fantastic game that they managed to win by 1 point. On Wednesday, Riv SW played one of the early favourites for the cup, CCC South, a team consisting of players from across the Riverina. This proved to be one of Alex's best games, with him being pivotal at the end of the game to save a goal and assist the "Tip Turkeys" to another one point win. Their last game of the preliminary rounds was against South Coast, which they won convincingly by 45 points.

Their position in the finals was assured, however would come down to for and against. Riv SW were eventually placed third behind Riverina Murray and CCC North. They were beaten in their play-off for third by the CIS, eventually finishing fourth. Riverina Murray were the eventual Champions this year.

Alex gained a great deal of experience this year and, as one of the handful of 14 year olds in his team, is eager to return in 2015 to test his skill against players his own age.

Year 10 Mock Interviews

The third instalment of the Year 10 Careers Development program was held on Friday 6 June.

In the lead up to this event students had undertaken sessions with Lizzie Wagner on professional presentation, then with the assistance of Judy Cussons, completed their resume, along with a covering letter for a job position. They then undertook a mock job interview with professionals from the community of Tumbarumba. Students from Batlow Technology School took the opportunity to be involved in this as well.

This has been an amazing journey for these students and has given them the opportunity to see what is involved in applying for a job, preparation and presentation of themselves and then actually undertaking an interview, albeit a mock one. The school is certain that the students will be better prepared for their future careers by undertaking this program.

The school would like to take this opportunity of thanking those community members that gave up their time to assist the students. Our thanks are extended to Miss Pholi, Careers Adviser, who played an integral part in the organisation of this program.

The students were also fortunate enough to have two former students of the school attend this day and outline their career journies.

Mid Course Examinations

Performing Arts Night

The talents of our school students were once again highlighted at the Performing Arts Night held 30 May 2014.

Parents, friends and peers were entertained by our talented students with a variety of music genre, ranging from love ballads, stage show to heavy metal as well as guitar and drum solos.

The crowd was also entertained by a witty drama skit performed by the 9/10 elective drama group. Items of students works were also on display throughout the MPC.

We were also lucky enough to have students from neighbouring high schools perform as well.

This night gives our senior music students the opportunity to perform in front of an audience in preparation for their HSC exams. For some of our junior students this was their first time in front of a larger audience and they performed magnificently. Congratulations to all.

Of course a huge thank you must be extended to our wonderful Music teacher, Mrs Beattie. Her commitment to ensuring that this night was a success is outstanding. Thank you must also be made to the students that worked behind the scenes and worked the lighting.

Senior Subject Information Evening for Yr 10

A senior Subject Information evening for Year 10 students progressing into their senior years in 2015 will be held Monday 16 June 2014, commencing at 6pm in the School's Library.

The meeting will begin with a general overview of the subject selection process. Parents and students will then have the opportunity to discuss subjects with individual teachers where they will give specific details and requirements for the courses on offer .

Tumbarumba High School will again be offering a comprehensive and diverse range of subjects.

This information evening is essential for every student considering progressing to senior school in 2015 and should not be missed. This is the time for students and their parents to seek guidance on the process of selecting appropriate courses to maximise their success as a senior student. Faculty representatives, executive staff and the careers adviser will be available to answer any questions on the evening.

The information session should conclude by 7.30 pm.

Subject selection forms must be submitted to the Front Office by Thursday 19 June. Some subjects are limited by the number of students and preference will be given to those students returning their completed forms first.

Trial of application ClassDojo in 9/10 French

Mr Laing has come across an exciting application, ClassDojo and is currently trialling this free app with his Stage 5 French class. This is to improve communication with parents. This app is available for smart phone and iPads and can be accessed directly via a website. This application allows the teacher to provide instant feedback to parents about their children.

The main function of this application is:

* accessing a report based on a number of positive and negative behaviours which are entered in class by clicking on a single button.

* Messaging between the teacher and the parents. Mr Laing intends to use the message function to send information regarding homework at the conclusion of each lesson. This will enable parents to know exactly what your child is required to study for their next lesson.

As a teacher, Mr Laing would like to evaluate if this is an effective way to communicate information to parents regarding their child's progress. It is just a click on a button to set student information so it will not interrupt learning time in class.

This application is not intended to replace normal communication procedures with the School.

A letter has been forwarded to parents of his students in his 9/10 French class on this app and the installation.

New Caledonia Meeting

The school trip to New Caledonia will be held in September. It is now time to organise a number of things. The Department of Education and Communities has given the all clear for the excursion to go ahead and it will be soon time to pay the deposit.

The good news is that there is still time to put your name down to go on this very exciting trip, even if you had not placed an expression of interest!

A meeting has been set down for Monday 12 May in room 305 at 6.30pm. It is vital that all participants and a parent/guardian attend.

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome to Term 2, which already looks like a very hectic 9 week term.

On Thursday 1 May, the School Representative Council will be inducted at a special assembly to commence with morning tea at 10.40 am followed by the induction at our assembly in the MPC.

AFL trails will also be held on 1 May, at Narrandera.

Friday 2 May will see a number of students assisting with "Reading at the Creekscape", a Tumbarumba Shire Council initiative, which has been running for a number of years.

School photos will be on Tuesday 6. Students are reminded to wear full school uniform. Envelopes for these photos have been issued to students and completed envelopes and money are to be handed directly to the photographer. There will also be a chance for sibling photos. Envelopes are available at the Front Office.

Zone Athletics will be held at Temora on Friday 9 May.

NAPLAN for years 7 and 9 will commence 12 May through to 16 May.

This is a fantastic tool in keeping parents, relatives and community members up to date with what is going on at the school. It allows the school to advise of any last minute changes to excursions, carnivals, etc.

Taste of the Air Force

Year 11 student, Brooke Anderson, had the opportunity of a lifetime when she was selected to attend a four day Flight Camp at the RAAF Base in East Sale. Brooke has flying in the blood and she certainly was very excited to be accepted to attend this Camp.

This certainly was a magnificent achievement for Brooke as only 12 young women were chosen from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and the ACT.

As you can see from the 2 photos that we have, you couldn't wipe the smile off Brooke's face. We will have more photos in the near future, so watch this space.

ESSA Results

The school's ESSA results (which stands for Essential Secondary Science Assessment) has highlighted the ongoing achievements of our students.

It is fantastic that no students were in the bottom two levels (levels 1 and 2) and we had the lowest percentage of students in level three since the test began.

The school had its highest percentage of students who have ever achieved level 5 and for the first time we had a student who achieved a result in level 6.

Our students achieved a full 5 scaled marks above the state average in their extended responses. This is a positive result and reflects on our focus on literacy, particularly in the writing area.

Regional Swimming

Congratulations to all our swimmers that competed in Zone swimming at Tumut on 21 February. You certainly did our school proud.

The school wishes to extend the best of luck to our swimmers that have advanced to Regional Swimming which will be held in Leeton on Friday 7 March. Zakk Stewart, Samuel Chaffey and Thomas Vogan will be competing in individual events and Ebony Shore, Tahlissa Welch, Caroline McLeod and Alex Crane who will be competing in the Girls 12 year old relay.

Presentation Night

The school's annual Presentation Night was held Monday 16 December 2013.

This was a night of academic sporting achievement for the students and it was wonderful to see the MPC filled to capacity with proud parents, grandparents and friends.

School Canteen to close

The School Canteen will close Friday 13 December at the end of lunch. Students will be required to bring their recess and lunch for the last three days of the school term.

Unfortunately this also means that the Canteen will not re-open in 2014, The school is unable to sustain the losses that it has made. This is due to the small number of students that we have and the amount of sales we would need to generate to cover costs.

The school is currently in negotiations with a new supplier for lunches and once this is finalised information will be advertised on the school's website and the App.

The school apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. The school would like to thank Megan McGrath who has been our Canteen operator for the past semester for all her hard work and commitment to the school.

Presentation Night

The school's annual Presentation Night will be held Monday 16 December, 2014, commencing at 7.30pm. It would be very much appreciated if parents, students and guests could be seated by 7.15pm.

This is a very significant event for the school as it showcases the students academic and sporting achievements.

As our students look splendid in their uniform they are requested to attend in full school uniform. The senior jumpers and maroon sports shirts will be excluded from the evening. Unfortunately students who are not in correct uniform will be excluded from receiving their award on stage. Any student who does not have the correct uniform is asked to see the Front Office prior to the evening to arrange for the correct uniform from the clothing pool.

The school looks forward to your attendance at this event. A light supper will be available at the end of the proceedings.

NSW Teachers Federation Meeting

On Tuesday 3 December the NSW Teachers' Federation has called a meeting from 9am to seek feedback on the proposed new Teachers' Award.

The majority of the staff at Tumbarumba High School have decided to attend this meeting. This will mean that the school will be able to offer minimum supervision for that period of time. Students are advised to attend school as normal from 9am. It is anticipated that classes will only be minimally disrupted. Classes will continue as per our timetable once the meeting concludes.

Team Building Camp

The Year 8 and 9 team building camp is just around the corner. Details of what to take has been handed out to students.

One final note is required to be completed which outlines any dietary requirements, medical information and aquatic activities permission note. This is required to be back at the school by Friday 29 November. Those students who do not return this note will be unable to participate in the water activities. Permission note - medical (pdf 128 KB).

Just a reminder that the bus will be departing for the camp at 8.30 am on Wednesday 4 December. Students are required to bring their recess and lunch, along with a drink for that day. All other meals will be provided. Students will return on Friday 6 December in time for buses.

New Time Table

The new time table commenced on November 11, 2013. This is a new era for our School with students moving into their new courses. The current year 7 will be joined by year 6 students from our feeder primary schools on Monday 25 November. The compressed curriculum was introduced to Year 11. This will entail these students to study three subjects per year.

The teachers have also embraced this new structure which will enable our students to maximise learning opportunities.

Students in stage 4 and 5 have now been placed into their new classes and electives for the coming year.

In years 7 and 8 there will be three core classes with an A, B, B structure and there will be four classes of mixed ability running through TAS, PDHPE, Visual Arts and Music.

In years 9 and 10 there are also three core classes with an A, B, B structure.

Students placement will be evaluated over the coming weeks to ensure all students can maximise their learning potential.

Stage 4 Team Building Camp

The Team Building Camp at Snowy River School Camp is fast approaching (4-6 December).

New Timetable Monday 11 November

An exciting new era will commence at Tumbarumba High School on Monday 11 November 2014 with the commencement of the new timetable.

The timetable will begin on day 6 and it will be issued to students this week.

The current year 10 will officially start their preliminary courses, however students who are undertaking TVET courses will begin those courses in 2014.

Our current year 8 and 9 will begin work on their new courses, with Year 8 starting their elective classes.

This will mean that students in these years will require new books and equipment to enable them to commence their new timetable.

Year 7 will remain in their current year and will be joined by year 6 students in weeks 8 and 9. They will continue to use their current books and equipment and will be working on a number of skill based activities with a focus on literacy and numeracy.

In line with the new time table sports day will change from Wednesday to Thursday. This decision was made primarily to reduce the impact on those students who will be undertaking TVET courses in Wagga Wagga in 2014.. This will also mean that Year meetings and Assemblies will change to Thursdays as well.

2014 Timetable Begins Monday 11 November 2013

On 11 November, 2013, the school will "roll over" into the compressed curriculum for the current year 10 students. This will mean that year 10 move into year 11. Some classes for year 11 will require students to attend before or after school to attend lessons. The current years 8 and 9 will also move up and begin their new courses.

Students will require new books.folders to begin their new courses and students should be discussing with their teachers what they will require for the new timetable.

A reminder to all students undertaking practical courses that they will need to have the appropriate footwear prior to the beginning of their new courses.

Year 7 will remain in stage 4 where they will be working on units of work aimed at developing their literacy and numeracy skills. In week 8 (25 November) they will be joined with the majority of year 6 students.

ESSA Test

The Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) test for Year 8 students will be held between Monday 11 and Friday 15 November. This test is completed on a computer and takes approximately 80 minutes.

The test contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are based around real world issues. Students will be tested on their:-

* Knowledge and understanding of Science,

* Skills in the process of scientific investigation.

* Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically.

* Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

The students will also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values.

Each student is required to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an ipod or portable player will be suitable.

Results of this test will be available during Term 1, 2014 and all results will be treated confidentially. A report will be sent to parents/carers and they willl be invited to complete a parent survey about the test and science learning.

Congratulations are extended to Cassandra Lewis and Eli Radford for being elected to the positions of School Captains for 2014. Zach Harvey was elected to the position of Vice Captain.

The positions of School Captains and Vice Captain is the pinnacle of student leadership within the school. As well as representing the Student Representative Council, they will represent the whole school.

The role of Captain and Vice Captain includes:

* Leading the Student Representative Council.

* Liaise with school students and staff and hold meetings with the Principal and Deputy Principal.

* Represent the student body at formal occasions such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

* Lead the School assemblies.

* Being a role model to all students within the school at all times.

On Friday 13 September the school received the group statistics for the Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results. These results demonstrates the positive direction our school is taking.The Principal, Dave Crelley, and teachers were elated with some of our results which included:

The best raw results for year 9 reading since 2009

The best raw results for year 9 spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy ever

The growth of our students in year 9 in the areas of reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy were the best in the (old) school education group and above state and regional growth.

These fantastic results are a reflection of the dedication of its teachers and students. It is pleasing to see the willingness by both teachers and staff to embrace and carry out changes required to improve literacy and numeracy. Well done!

It is anticipated that NAPLAN reports to parents will occur the week commencing 14 October.

Start Smart - Eat Breakfast at School

Tumbarumba High School, in partnership with Tumbarumba's IGA has introduced "Start Smart - Eat Breakfast at School". Each school morning Students are able to come in to the Food Tech room and grab some breakfast from 8.30 am to 8.55 pm. These sessions are fully supervised by teachers and students are required to clear up.

Breakfast is important in re-fuelling the body and research has found that if breakfast is skipped the result can be feeling lethargic and tired and can lead to difficulties in concentration. Start Smart is open to all students.

This initiative commenced on 30 August and by all accounts is proving very popular with students and teachers have made many favourable comments

Tumbarumba IGA is generously donating all goods and students are able to have cereal, fresh fruit and toast. Once a week there will be scrambled eggs available using eggs produced by the school chickens..

The school wishes to thank IGA for their generosity in providing nutritional food for the students of Tumbarumba High School.

Year 6 Parents/Carers Information Evening

Parents and Carers of Year 6 students who will be attending the Tumbarumba High School in 2014 are invited to a meeting to be held in the School's library on Wednesday 11 September commencing at 6.30 pm. with a barbeque followed by the meeting to commence at 7.00 pm. Parents/carers, year 6 students and siblings are invite to this important meeting.

This meeting will allow the opportunity to talk with parents about their child's transition to Tumbarumba High School.

Recently a letter has been distributed to local public schools for distribution to all Year 6 students. This letter invited students in year 6 who have indicated that Tumbarumba High School as their preferred high school to an extended period of transition. The letter also outlined the implementation of the new senior curriculum delivery which has a significant impact on the remainder of the school.

Tumbarumba High School Turns Yellow

On Friday 23 August Students and staff participated in a number of fundraising activities for Daffodil Day to raise vital funds in the fight against cancer.

The school turned yellow with students wearing yellow and making a gold coin donation. Staff held a morning tea with lots of delicious yellow goodies and the SRC sold Daffodil merchandise down the main street as well as the school.

The school raised in excess of $1700 for this worthwhile cause.

French Theatre Club Performs

French students from all years worked collaboratively under the guidance of Charlotte Perrat to learn about French theatre. This study included dedicating one lunch per week, as well as three study days during semester 1. Students learnt about the role of French theatre in France, the writer Molière and about stage directions in French. With guidance, students wrote a script for a play entirely in French, deciding on the roles, developing props and choreographing two dances. The performance was presented to the whole school at the final assembly of term 2 and was well received.

Miss Perrat has now moved onto another school and is sadly missed by students at our school.

Medical records will be updated during this term, in accordance with the Department's new records system. This will ensure that the school has the most up to date information on your child's health.

If your child/children has/have a medical condition you should have received a copy of the new forms that are required to be completed and returned to the school as soon as possible. This will allow the school to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child/ren.

The school is also in the process of updating other student records, particularly parent/carer emergency contact details. It is essential that these details are correct as this ensures that the school is best able to meet the needs of the student.

Ski Trip

A reminder to students that the school's ski trip to Mount Selwyn will be held on Wednesday 14 August. The bus is limited to 44 students so notes and payment must be paid by Friday 26 July 2013.

The bus will be departing the school at 6am and will arrive back at approximately 5.45pm. Suitable clothing for snow conditions must be worn, especially water proof gloves and a beanie/hat. Clothing is available for hire. Sunscreen, sunglasses or goggles are essential.

Students may purchase their own food and drink or purchase from the kiosk.

Staffing Changes

Term 3 has seen a number of changes to staffing at the school.

The school welcomes Mr Matthew Davis to the school for the rest of this year. Mr Davis is a graduate from the University of Western Sydney and is Science and Chemistry trained. This position is an above establishment position and he will be assisting throughout the school.

Mrs McGrath is currently on maternity leave and has been replaced by Ms Dianne Hall. The school wishes Mrs McGrath all the best.

Mr Adam Hughes has moved on to Batlow Technology School as a PDHPE teacher. As a result of this move, Ms Hill has moved from her position in the MultiCat classroom to HSIE permanently.

For the remainder of this term, Mr McQueen (2 days) and Mrs Haslett (3 days) will be working in the MultiCat room. Term 4 will see Mr Patrick Wignell take up the position in the MultiCat room. Mr Wignell brings with him an extensive background in special education.

The school also welcomes Mrs Megan McGrath as our new Canteen Operator. The canteen is again fully operational and will be open for recess and lunch five days per week. It is anticipated that there will be some menu changes and students will be advised as soon as these changes are known.

Senior Course Booklet 2014-15

In 2014 students entering year 11 will be undertaking a new model of senior curriculum delivery; known as Senior Vertical Curriculum. It is designed to provide our students with greater choice and maximise our curriculum viability.

This is an exciting proposal that has been adopted by a number of smaller high schools across NSW. This will equip our students with the necessary skills and qualifications irrespective of whether they choose to pursue an academic or vocational pathway post school.

Year 10 students have been provided with the Senior Course Booklet for 2014-15. Students and parents are encouraged to peruse this booklet over the school holidays. The booklet is also attached for your convenience.

Talented Students Shine

Our Performing Arts Night was a huge success with family and friends gathering on a rather cold night in Tumbarumba to watch the talented students of our school. Static displays of students work were also on display throughout the Multi Purpose Centre. An album of photos have been uploaded to our gallery.

A huge thank you to our music teacher, Mrs Beattie, and her band of workers for organising such a wonderful evening. Favourable comments have been heard throughout the community on this fantastic evening.

It was also exciting for our students to use the new sound system. For some this was the first time using a microphone.

Senior Curriculum 2014

Parent Presentation (ppt 873 KB)In 2014, Tumbarumba High School will be offering a Vertical Senior Curriculum, similar to that currently being run in Stages 4 and 5.

Students will undertake 3 courses per year, beginning in week 6 term 4 and concluding in around 12 months time when the students undertake their higher school certificate examinations in those three subjects.

I would like to thanks all of the parents for their support throughout this process and have included my presentation from Monday 17th June 2013 for those parents who were not able to attend.

I would also like to acknowledge the information and support I have received form Queanbeyan, Matraville, Cessnock and Hay High Schools, who all have contributed to this process.

I now look forward to working with staff, students and parents to ensure we are able to offer an affordable, broad and rigorous curriculum to our students both now and into the future.

First Aid Course

Our school operated canteen has been successfully running this term with lots of great reports on the food that is available to students and staff. Unfortunately our canteen co-ordinator will be leaving us at the end of the term. Our appreciation is extended to Robyn for all her hard work in setting up the canteen and providing nutritional meals to all.

With the co-ordinator leaving we have a position vacant. This vacancy will be offered as a paid casual position for up to 5 hours per day.

Senior Curriculum Planning for 2014 and Beyond Meeting

A meeting will be held on Monday 17 June at 7pm in the School's Library. This meeting is open to all interested students, parents and community members to discuss the viability of our current senior curriculum and a proposal for the implementation of a "compressed" or "college" model.

Basically this means that students will undertake just 3 subjects in a year (Preliminary and HSC) and then 3 subjects the next year. Each year they will have a different cohort. The advantage of this lies in the numbers of students who can potentially choose from "one" curriculum group and the increased choice this can potentially lead to.

Tumbarumba High Performing Arts Night

Once again the talents of the students of Tumbarumba High School will be showcased in a Performing Arts Night.

This will be held at the Multi Purpose Centre at School on Wednesday 19 June, commencing at 7.30 pm.

Entry is $5 for students, $10 an adult and $15 for a family.

Please come along and help raise funds for a much needed sound system for the school.

Zone Athletics

The School's team travelled Temora on 20 May to participate in Zone Athletics. It was a "four seasons in one day" weather wise. Well done to all those involved and thanks must be extended to the parents who transported students.

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

"The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.

On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students will take the 2013 NAPLAN tests.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives.

All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from participating in the tests. NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Scripture Classes for Years 7 & 8

A trial of scripture lessons for stage 4 (students in years 7 and 8) who are interested in attending these lessons will begin this Friday, 10 May 2013. Scripture classes are not compulsory. Scripture classes will be rotated throughout the timetable over the term.

There are 3 options available:

1 To decline the offer and attend normal classes.

2 Attend a non-denominational scripture with GenR8 Ministries and a consortium of local church groups.

3 Attend Catholic Scripture.

A permission letter has today (6 May) been given to students in years 7 and 8 and is also attached to this news item. This permission letter need only be returned if your child wishes to attend scripture classes. The form is required to be returned to the Front Office by Wednesday 8 May 2013.

Cross Country

The school's cross country event will be held Wednesday 8 May at the Tumbarumba Golf Club. Students will be walking to the Golf Club at 12.00 noon and will undertake the event at 12.40 pm.

New Skoolbag App for Android Devices - NOW AVAILABLE!

We now have the new Skoolbag app available for android devices. Many of our parents and members of the community have asked for this and we can now say we have delivered. Parents can receive "live" information around a host of issues, including when reports, newsletters, parent/teacher evenings and other events are schedulled.

The take up of the apple-based Skoolbag app was beyond our initial expectations. Please pass on the availability of these two apps to your friends, relatives and members of the community to ensure our messages get to the people who will benefit most.

Anzac Day Ceremony

Tumbarumba High School will once again be involved in the Anzac Day March and Ceremony in Tumbarumba.

Students are invited to march and participate in the service that follows. Students will need to gather outside the RSL Hall (Winton Street) at 10.15 am on Thursday 25 April.

Full uniform is required to be worn on the day. Students will be required to wear enclosed stable shoes that match the school's uniform policy.

We look forward to the students' participation.

2014 Trip to New Caledonia

After such a fantastic and successful trip to New Caledonia in 2012 for students studying French, the school is once again looking at another tour for students in years 7-9 who are studying French.

An information evening will be held on Thursday 2 May at 6.30pm in room 305 (French Room). There is no commitment to participate in the overseas tour by attending this meeting, it is just to gather information about the study tour so that parents/carers can make an informed decision about this event.

Skoolbag App Trial begins

The school is now trialling our own iPhone app to help us to communicate more effectively with our parents, students and the community in general.

At this stage we are trialling the iPhone version for 30 days. It the trial is a success we will then be providng the android version as wekk.

We are asking for as many parents and students as possible to install our Skoolbag School App. It's free!! Go to the Apple App store and search for Tumbarumba High School.

This app will have some great advantages. It will allow the school to get messages out to parents/carers a lot quicker and will also have our calendar, newsletters and lots more on it.

We are very excited about this new innovation and we look forward to your feedback.

Science Faculty Review

A program review in Science will be undertaken at our school on 26 March 2013. The Review team would like to speak with students as part of this review process. The school expects to gain some useful ideas from the review for improving aspects of our school.

A number of students have been randomly selected to meet with a member of the review team in a group of approximately 8-10 students. The Review Team member will ask the students a number of questions about aspects of the school. This will give the Review Team member an indication of the students impressions of the school. This information will then be pooled in order to gain an understanding of the current and future directions for the school.

Letters have been forwarded to parents/caregivers of the students that have been chosen to be part of this review.

National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) - Literacy and Numeracy 2013

From Tuesday 14 May until Thursday 16 May 2013 students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all schools will complete the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

The results of the tests will provide important information to our school about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs.

Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Information such as name, gender, date of birth and language background will also be collected as part of the NAPLAN program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student's right to privacy is maintained.

A letter outlining dates and what the student is required to bring with them into the tests has been distributed to all concerned students to give to their parents/caregivers. A copy of that letter can also be downloaded from here.

The Supervisor will be responsible to the Principal for:

The day to day operation of the canteen, including the supervision/rostering of voluntary workers.

Tumbarumba High to get an App

Tumbarumba High School is entering the new age of Apps. In an endeavour to communicate effectively with parents and the community in a timely manner, the school will be trialling an App to see if we can increase the speed and accuracy of information. This is certainly an exciting venture for the school to take up and it is hoped that with the popularity of iphones, ipads and androids the offer will be taken up by parents and the community.

The school has entered into a trial to test the effectiveness of this App and if it proves to be effective it will be available for both Apple and Android. Whilst it is in the test phase, it will only be available for Apple.

Mistral Kendall-Hawk Awarded Dean's Award for Academic Excellence

A former student of this School, Mistral Kendall-Hawk, has been awarded the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence at Charles Sturt University, Albury Campus.

This award recognises the achievement of academic excellence among undergraduate students enrolled in courses offered through the Faculty of Science.

To be eligible for this prestigious award a student must meet the following criteria:-

* Achieved a grade of Distinction or High Distinction in all coursework subjects undertaken or H1 in the case of Dissertation subject and

* Completed a minimum of 32 points over a maximum of 3 sessions.

A ceremony will be held at the Gums Cafe function centre on the Albury-Wodonga Campus on 13 March.

From the Counsellor's Desk

Tumbarumba High School's Counsellor is Lara McEachern. I am at school Tuesdays.

My role as counsellor is to assist students make the most of their high school years in a safe, productive and happy environment.

Specifically my roles includes

a: individual counselling. This counselling is confidential. I see students about issues such as peer problems, family issues, matters to do with learning and many mental health issues including depression and anxiety.

b: conducting assessments: I assess student's cognitive skills, academic skills and aspects of behaviour and mental health

c: consultancy. I work with parents and teachers to assist students in their academic endeavors and general well-being. I also liaise with other Department of Education and Training personnel, and with outside agencies, such as Community Mental Heath, paediatricians and other health workers.

Students can get to see me in a number of ways. They can self-refer, by coming to see me or leaving a note under my door or asking any staff member to let me know they wish to see me. They can also be referred by parents or school staff and Learning and Support Team.

Occasionally this year I will publish a short article in the newsletter on topics with which I deal on a regular basis which affects our students. Some of the topics which I intend to cover include study approaches, adolescent depression, coping with the HSC and coping with parental separation and divorce. These articles are intended to give some basic information, and not a comprehensive coverage of the subject. I would be more than happy to discuss any points raised in the articles with parents and with students. At the end of each article I will also list a couple of resources which students, parents or staff are most welcome to borrow.

We look to a happy and productive 2013 where I continue to be part of a school which is striving to help each student work towards realising his or her individual potential.

Stage 4 Team Building Camp

A team building camp for students in Year 7 and 8 will be held on 4-6 December 2013 to be held at Snowy River School Camp which is located at Tallangatta.

Students will have the opportunity to build on relationships fostered throughout the year, develop resilience, exercise independence and foster their leadership skills.

Students will experience outdoor activities such as Canoeing, raft building, swimming and fishing.

The cost at this stage, for 2 nights accommodation and transportation to and from the camp will be $240.00.

A $40 deposit is requested to be paid by Friday 22 February to the School Office and a series of 5 instalments of $40 to be paid throughout the year. Further details are included in the note provided to students. This note has been attached to this article for your convenience.

Zone Swimming Carnival

Good luck to our 16 students who will represent our school at the Zone Swimming Carnival to be held in Tumut on Thursday 21 February.

Thank you to the parents that will be transporting these students and also to Mrs Crelley, who will be the supervising teacher.

$10 to be paid to the Front Office for transport costs. There is a $2 admission charge to the pool, which is to be paid direct to the pool.

Students are to be at the Swimming Pool by 8.45 am, and bring along with their swimmers, towels, goggles, sunscreen, water, hat and food/money for canteen.

Religious Education

In 2012, our school was approached by GenR8 Ministries, on behalf of some local churches (The Catholic Church will also offer a program specifically for Catholic Students) to provide students in years 7 and 8 with a period of religious education. A note was sent home to all students in year 6 and 7 giving them and their parents the opportunity to "opt out" of this program. The note is also attached to the last newsletter which can be accessed through this site.

As a result, we will be looking at providing students with the opportunity to access this service in 2013.

Only students who return the note to the front office will be able to opt out of this program, all other students will be attending. It is essential that any parent who feels strongly about this issue and does NOT want their child to attend religious education MUST return the note to the front office as soon as possible.

Movember 2012

Movember raises funds and awareness for men's health, especially prostate cancer and male mental health.

After a very successful year in 2011, the challenge was on again this year to raise money for this worthwhile cause. 6 male teachers, along with a number of students, once again grew moustaches in the name of charity.

Each year group competed to reign supreme to raise the most money for Movember. The school is proud to announce that Year 11 raised a huge $1314.00, followed closely by Year 10 who raised $1043.00. Year 9 came third, raising $254. Year 7 raised $77 and Year 8 $41.00. The school banded together and made $2730.15. This is a fantastic effort and congratulations are extended to all concerned.

The community of Tumbarumba is thanked for supporting this very worthwhile cause.

So the challenge will be on again in 2013. Who will be winner? Men's health.

Yarrangobilly Caves Excursion

31 students from years 7 and 8 took part in an excursion to Yarrangobilly Caves on Friday 23 November, as part of their Geography studies of Kaste ecosystems.

The cave tour was a highlight of the excursion as it showed just how impressive underground cave features are when viewed first hand.

Another highlight of the day was the swim in the thermal pool. However the walk back up the hill was not so impressive.

Our students represented our school well and one member of public actually comment on how delightful our students were. Well done Years 7 and 8!!

Religious Education in 2013

GenR8 Ministries have approached the school to assess the viability of running religious education classes in Years 7 and 8 at Tumbarumba High School in 2013.

In order for the school to make a judgement on this program's viability, we need any parent who does not wish their child to participate in this program to return the form that is attached.

Year 6 Parent & Carer Transition Meeting

Parents and carers and year 6 students that will be attending Tumbarumba High School next year, are invited to an information evening on Monday 10 December. This will be held in the School's library and commences at 6.30 pm. A barbecue dinner and light refreshments will be provided.

The school will be presenting an overview of the curriculum offered at Tumbarumba High School, together with the structure of the stage 4 classes in 2013. There will be an opportunity to ask questions as well.

Our office will be open from 6.30 pm to give parents an opportunity to purchase uniform if they wish to do so. Eftpos facilities are now available. There is a $2.50 fee on credit card.

Year 12 Formal

The school community said goodbye to Year 12 students at a very special occasion held 10 November 2012 - the Year 12 Formal. 100 plus guests attended this special evening. The Year 12 students looked splendid in their formal attire and a wonderful night was had by all who attended.

We would like to extend a very special thank you to Ms Krystyna Ikier, the Year 12 Year Adviser, who did a magnificent job, along with her band of workers, to make this night such a success.

These students are now eagerly awaiting their results from the HSC. The school wishes them all the very best for their future careers.

Mathematics Program Review - Evaluation Survey

In 2011, the four Principals of the Riverina Highlands Learning Community (Tumbarumba HS, Batlow TS, Tumut HS and Gundagai HS) sought to undertake a review of the teaching of Mathematics and numeracy. Parents, students and teachers were asked a wide range of questions in order to provide feedback to the panel with the sole focus of improving our student's outcomes in both numeracy and Mathematics.

This month, we are undertaking an evaluation of this review to determine the level of progress we have made against the recommendations. These recommendations are:

Recommendation 1- That the Highlands Learning Community head teachers, with the support of their Principals, re-negotiate their role as head teacher mathematics in the context of their school and the learning community.

Recommendation 2- That as the Highlands Learning Community the head teachers lead their faculties to adopt a rigorous approach to the development, implementation and maintenance of a programming and registration policy which will ensure that teaching and learning programs:

• have a consistent format;

• meet syllabus requirements;

• satisfy HSC monitoring requirements;

• are regularly registered and evaluated;

• show clear links to quality teaching elements;

• meet the learning needs of all students; and

• are developed to be able to be shared across the Highlands Learning Community

Recommendation 3- That the Highlands Learning Community head teachers lead their faculties to adopt a rigorous approach to the development, implementation and maintenance of a Year 7 – 12 assessment policy which will ensure that:

• all student work is monitored on a regular basis;

• assessment schedules for all years are developed, published and adhered to;

• assessment tasks are related to teaching and learning programs;

• assessment tasks and record keeping refer explicitly to syllabus outcomes or strands within the course;

• all students are aware of the reason for and nature of assessment tasks and how they will be marked;

• all students receive timely and accurate feedback on assessment tasks that supports them to improve; and

• all documents and resources developed are able to be shared across the Highlands Learning Community.

Recommendation 4- That the Highlands Learning Community head teachers lead their faculties to adopt a rigorous approach to raising expectations for the academic performance of all students.Parent Survey - Mathematics (pdf 234 KB)

Recommendation 5- That the Highlands Learning Community head teachers support their faculties to work toward fully integrating the available technology into programs.

Recommendation 6- That the Highlands Learning Community Principals support their Mathematics faculties in fostering and developing a mathematics-based learning community

I have attached a copy of the evaluation sheet for parents at the end of this newsletter; it also appears on our website. Whilst we are focussing on years 8 and 10, I welcome any feedback from parents and students in relation to the recommendations of the review. Students in year 8 and 10 have already completed their evaluation surveys. However, if students and parents in other year groups wish to comment and provide us with feedback they can do so by emailing me personally at david.crelley@det.nsw.edu.au. All comments and feedback will be treated in the strictest confidence.

This evaluation is critical if we are to continually improve our practice and delivery of numeracy and Mathematics to the students of Tumbarumba High School.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

During this year students and staff have been focusing on positive values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity and Excellence.

During Year meetings students have been reflecting on what these words mean to them.

At our week 3 assembly we celebrated that the our school is a place of positive learners. Several students were recognised for their excellence. Congratulations is extended to all.

The Positive Behaviour for Learning award system is:

Academic award for excellence - 80% and above.
Effort and Application - the student displays a positive commitment to learning, cultural activities and sport.
School Service Award - assisting fellow students, teachers and members of the community in a variety of ways.
Attendance Award - for 100% attendance.

Year 6 Transition

The school will be holding three full transition days for students who have applied to attend Tumbarumba High School's year 7 cohort in 2013.

The following days have been set aside: Thursday 8, 15 and 29 November, 2013.

The days have been designed to run as a normal high school day where students will be introduced to the different subjects offered.

Each day will run from 9 am until 3.20 pm Students may walk, be dropped off or catch their bus directly to and from the High School on each of these days. Students are required to bring their pencil case, a writing book or paper as well as their recess and lunch. Canteen facilities are available.

Canberra University Excursion

Students in Years 9 through to 11 will have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand what it is like for a uni student. A day has been organised for this to happen at Canberra University on November 6, 2012. Students will participate in enriching educational experiences that will assist and familiarise them with living and learning in this type of environment.

This will be an opportunity for students to make an informed decision about their future and the pathways they will choose.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, however if your child does not like pizza, then they will need to bring their own lunch. Students may also wish to bring along snacks and water. They will be responsible for their belongings.

Students are required to wear their normal school uniform and comfortable closed in flat shoes as students will be on their feet all day. They are also required to bring along a notepad and pen.

There is no cost to the students or to the school. This includes transport.

Transport will be by coach with seat-belts and will be leaving the school at 6 am and will return by 6pm. Students will be supervised by Mr Blenkins, Mrs McGrath and Ms Guthrie.

New Caledonia Excursion

The adventure to New Caledonia is now over. All had a fantastic time and students and teachers have been reflecting on their big adventure. Over the next few weeks stories will be published on the website along with some more photos.

The students should be proud of their achievements whilst on their travels. They not only were wonderful ambassadors for the School, but the Tumbarumba community.

A special thank you must be extended to the teachers that volunteered their time to this exciting experience. They certainly well went above and beyond.

An afternoon tea will be organised shortly to enable students and teachers to share their experiences. So stay tuned.

Of course thank you must be extended to the parents of these students for supporting them during their journey.

Students Arrive safely in Australia

All students, parents and staff have arrived safely back in Australia after a short flight from New Caledonia. They now have to spend a long day in Sydney awaiting the departure of their train from Central Station. They are expected to arrive in Tumbarumba on a bus around 5am on Thursday morning. We wish them a safe trip from Sydney to Tumbarumba.

Success at State Athletics

Congratulations is extended to Cayden Wilesmith and Alex Crelley on their success at State Athletics held at Homebush during the week ending 7 September.

Both boys performed extremely well in their respective events. Alex placed 6th in the 12 years discus and Cayden placed in the top ten in high jump.

This is a fantastic effort and the school is very proud of their achievements.

Variety Night

A showcase of our students talents was presented to the community in the form of a Variety Night which was held Tuesday 4 September.

Family and members of the community witnessed a fantastic night full of great singing acts, musical acts and exhibition of students work.

Proceeds from this night will go towards the purchase of much needed musical equipment.

A very special thank you is extended to Mrs Beattie for organising this event. Her time and commitment to this event is very much appreciated.

P&C Meeting

Whole School Resilience Day

Students in Years 7 to 11 participated in a wide range of activities aimed at building their social skills, resilience and self esteem on Thursday 16 August.

These activities received wonderful feedback from students, with students requesting that some of these activities be repeated again in Term 4. A huge thank you must be extended to the teachers who organised this day. Long hours were put in to make this day a success.

One highlight of the day was the presentation made by Senior Constable Tony Rush who spoke honestly and openly with the students from stage 5 and 6. The students appreciated his honesty and was certainly a topic of conversation for several days.

Students in stage 4 enjoyed a full day of team building, with a focus on antibullying. The most popular activity was "Minute to Win It".

Another day is already in the pipe line for Term 4 as staff believe that this is most beneficial to all students.

Jordan Dennis to play in National Schools Bowls Championships

Congratulations are extended to Jordan Dennis who has been chosen to represent NSW at the National Schools Championships for Lawn Bowls at Port Macquarie later this term.

Jordan also received a silver medal representing the Riverina Region at the Combined High Schools Lawn Bowls Championships on the South Coast. The team was narrowly defeated by the last shot of the tournament.

This is an absolute outstanding achievement and the school wishes Jordan all the best at the Championships in Port Macquarie.

New Caledonia - Here We Come

The countdown has begun. Tuesday 18 September will see students and staff making their way to Sydney to fly out to New Caledonia on Wednesday 19.

Extra tutorial sessions have been going well with students (as well as teachers). The students have been learning about shopping using Pacific Francs.

There will be a parent information evening Tuesday 28 August, commencing at 6pm in room 305. Mr Laing will go over last minute details for the trip.

Regional Athletics

5 students competed in the Riverina Regional Athletics Carnival in Albury on Friday 3 August. Congratulations to these students for their fantastic efforts and great sportsmanship. All should be proud of their achievements.

3 students qualified for the combined High Schools State Athletics Carnival to be held at Homebush during September. Congratulations to Tom Bennetts, Alex Crelley and Cayden Wilesmith for qualifying.

Education Week

Education Week is an annual celebration and showcases, promotes and celebrates the achievements of students and staff of public schools. This celebration commenced in 1954.

Education Week 2012 was launched on Monday 30 July. This year our school will be celebrating two main events.

Our dance troupe will be showcasing their energetic dance at the Marketplace, Wagga Wagga on Tuesday 31 July. Our dancers have been busily fine tuning their routine under the watchful eye of Mrs Jackson. Good luck to the group. We know that you will do the school proud.

On Wednesday 1 August the school will be holding an Education Week Assembly. This year's Student Representative Council students will be inducted. Parents and carers of these students have been invited to attend and then join in for morning tea.

A huge number of academic achievement awards will also be presented to students highlighting the fantastic achievements made by our students.

New Television for Library

This week saw the installation of a brand new 46 inch digital television. Last term our Librarian, Mrs Grace McEachern entered an Austar competition and won a gift voucher for a staggering $1,000.00.

To benefit all the school, it was decided to purchase a much needed television for the Library, as the current television, whilst still working, was analogue and was no longer suitable, given the recent digital switchover.

The Great Tumbarumba High School Spelling Bee

The inaugural Tumbarumba High School Spelling Bee was launched on Monday 23 July, 2012.

This initiative will encourage students to demonatrate and be recognised for academic excellence.

All students in Years 7 through to 10 undertook a pre-test of 25 predetermined words. These words were then marked and returned to them, along with a list of the correct spelling.

In two weeks the students will again be tested on those words to identify improvement and overall score. Both improvement and overall score will be recorded in the student's respective houses.

This is another exciting Positive Behaviour for Learning initiative and we look forward to some amazing results.

Dux Assembly

The school paid tribute to Brin Hussell, our Dux of the Year for 2011, at a special assembly held Friday 8 June.

Brin was presented her Dux certificate as well as a cheque from Bendigo Bank in front of the school and family and friends.

Brin is currently studying secondary teaching at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga.

DANCERS SHINE AT RIVERINA DANCE FESTIVAL

Students from Tumbarumba High School, along with students from Batlow Technology School, Gundagai and Tumut High participated in the Riverina Dance Festival held in Albury on 1 June.

Our students had a very early start and were keen to showcase the dance routines that they had prepared. The dance group was managed by Deputy Principal, Mrs Fiona Jackson, who also took the logisitics and the huge task of making the costumes.

The students were amazed at the calibre of the talent of the other acts. Our students stepped up to the plate when it was their turn and were magnificent. This is a fantastic achievement, given that they have had limited dance practice together.

We look forward to the dance routine being performed at a future assembly.

Breakfast Club at Tumbarumba High

Tumbarumba IGA have generously donated food items for the School's Breakfast Club. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this club gives students that do not get the chance or leave home early to have breakfast before the school day begins.

This is available to all students every Wednesday at 8.30 to 8.55 am in the Food Tech Room.

Students are requested to collect IGA dockets as IGA will donate a percentage of the monetary value towards the school. There will be a prize for the year group that brings in the most monetary value.

Partnership between Rotary Club of Tumbarumba & School

A partnership has been formed between the Rotary Club of Tumbarumba and the school known as "The Rotary Club of Tumbarumba Careers Development Program".

This program will be available to all Year 10 students and involves a professional presentation seminar conducted by the Lizzie Wagner Group from Canberra, a resume writing workshop with Bridson's Employment Services and a Mock Interview Day which relies on professionals from the local community to form interview panels.

These activities will assist students in their transition to the workplace.

Rotary realised the benefits of these activities and have not only supported it financially, but have made members available to mentor the students.

The school is extremely grateful for this support and looks forward to a successful program.

ANZAC Day Poetry Award

Congratulations is extended to year 10 student, Gary Spratling, for winning the senior section of the ANZAC poetry competition organised by Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack.

This is the second consecutive year that a student from this school has won this prestigious award.

Mr McCormack presented Gary with a certificate and book last Wednesday 2 May.

P&C Fundraiser

A huge thank you is extended to the Tumbarumba High School P&C Committee who catered for the Staff Development Day which was held at the School on 23 April. 120 teachers throughout the region attended this Development Day.

The support by way of donation of food, money and time was overwhelming and very much appreciated. Approximately $2400 was raised from this one event.

Once again a big thank you to those that were involved in this very busy but fun day.

Brooke goes Solo

Last year Brooke Anderson received a scholarship from the Royal Australian Navy
Gliding Association that went towards glider training and flying.

During the past 12 months Brooke has been learning to fly under experienced CFI
instructors, mainly at Mt. Beauty and sometimes at Bunyan near Canberra.

Brooke also attended a "Women's in Gliding week" at Benalla this year and
gained a lot of experience.

After a considerable amount of training, some 90 odd take off and landings and had to wait until after she turned 15, Brooke last weekend at Mt. Beauty went solo for the first time. This certainly is a huge achievement for Brooke and the School congratulates her on this fantastic accomplishment.

Gliding is in Brooke's blood, with a number of her family members avid gliders. We can't wait for Brooke's next triumph!!

ANZAC Day March

Our school will once again be participating in the ANZAC Day march to be held 25 April.

It would be appreciated if students could assemble, in full uniform, at the Cenotaph at 10.15 am. The march commences at 10.30 am, followed by the Service.

To many in our community ANZAC Day is a special day as we remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice and the resurgence of interest and participation over recent years is remarkable.

Year 8 Welfare Day

Miss Amey and Mr Laing have been busy organising a fun filled and thought provoking day for students in Year 8, which will be held this Thursday 29 March.

This day is to promote a safe and supporting learning environment and will focus on team building, bullying and harassment.

The morning session will be filled with interesting activities and in the afternoon the students will have the opportunity of watching the DVD "Remember the Titans".

The cost of the day is $10 and students in Year 8 are welcome to wear casual dress, with sensible appropriate footwear.

Dancers to Audition for Riverina Dance Festival

A very excited Fiona Jackson has been putting our dancers through their paces in preparation of their audition for the Riverina Dance Festival which will be held in June this year in Wagga Wagga.

A panel of three will visit the school on Friday 30 March for judging. Hopefully we will hear that we have been successful at the end of the term.

What a great opportunity for our dancers to showcase their talent. We wish them well!!

Our very enthusiastic and talented group of dancers had Sydney based Choreographer, "Centennial" visit on Monday 19 March. This dance session had been generously funded by the Tumbarumba Shire Youth Council and Council.

"Centennial" did dance sessions including hip hop and crumping.

He was just amazed at the commitment and eagerness our dancers showed and was very impressed with their dance routine that they had choregraphed with Aleeta Northey.

Regional Swimmers Victorious

After a very long and eventful journey to get to Leeton, due to road closures caused by the recent flooding, our team of swimmers, which consisted of Alex Crelley, Chloe Simiana, Jack Vogan, Seiji Hiroto, Clayton Griffiths and Jonathan Edye performed magnificently at the Regional Swimming Carnival on Thursday 15 March.

The relay team were just nudged out of first place, which meant that they came second and will be heading to Sydney to compete at State level on 1 to 3 April 2012.

Jack Vogan came first in the 50 metre Freestyle, with a personal best time of 27.00 seconds. He also came second in 100 metres backstroke and 100 metres butterfly. Jack will also be participating in these events at State level.

Alex Crelley and Chloe Simiana achieved personal bests for their events and should be very proud of their performances.

We congratulate all those involved and wish to thank the 2 mums that braved the numerous detours (which included forestry roads) to get the students there and home safe and sound.

Competitions and Assessments

These competitions are seen as an opportunity for students to engage in challenging tasks. They also provide valuable practice at undertaking rigorous examinations.

Priority Schools Program - Survey Information

Thanks to the efforts of Mrs Jackson, Ms Pholi and Mrs LeCerf, who phoned parents personally to collect data and to chase up outstanding surveys, we achieved a 10% return from our families.

Our thanks and appreciation to all of our families. The surveys have now been forwarded and we now await the decision as to whether we are successful in our application to become a Priority School.

Literacy Blitz Program 2012 Commences

The week commencing 27 February saw the implementation of a planned blitz for all students for a 9 week period. Each student will be given an exercise book which they will need to bring to school every day. Each week literacy skill sheets will be provided to students and are required to be completed at the beginning of class. This should only take 5 minutes.

This planned initiative is designed to improve the overall literacy ability of all students with the view of enhancing their skills for the HSC or vocational pathway.

The literacy support documents are attached to the newsletter each week for parents and community members. If given the opportunity please check them out and review your child's literacy book. They are a fantastic tool and the results will allow teachers to further tailor a program for next year.

Correct Footwear Compulsory for Practical Classes

It is a legal requirement to ensure the health and safety of all students at this School. Students undertaking practical lessons are required to wear footwear to be made of leather to protect from spills and drops.

The school's Principal outlined this in issue 2 of the 2012 Newsletter.

All students in years 7 and 8 undertake lessons in Design and Technology and Science and require appropriate footwear to be made of leather. Students in years 9-12 undertake Science and elect to undertake classes such as Metal, Food Technology and Woodwork and are required to wear correct footwear for those electives. It is the school's intention to enforce correct footwear in these subjects or move the student to a subject where this is not an issue.

The correct footwear can be leather joggers, just not the joggers that have the mesh inserts. Your assistance and co-operation in this regard is greatly appreciated.

Dance Workshop with Aleeta Northey

Our school is fortunate once more to enlist the services of Aleeta Northey, Choreographer. You may recall Aleeta was at the school in March 2011 and inspired many students in the field of dance. This was a fantastic experience and resulted in a choreographed routine which was showcased at many events throughout the community and entered into the Riverina Dance Spectacular.

This is year's workshop will be over three days - Monday 20 February, Wednesday 22 February and Friday 24 February. Cost of the workshop is $80.00. Permission notes and payment to be made to the Front Office prior to the workshop.

Year 7 Settles in

Year 7 have settled well into their new school and are hard at work.

This year sees stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) consisting of three classes. We have a class T, which consists of independent workers and then have two classes of U and M, which are ungraded and based on social fit. So far this is working well and we look forward to their progress.

Last Thursday evening, 2 February, an information evening and barbecue was held for parents and students of Year 7. This was well attended and afforded the opportunity to meet with staff who will be teaching year 7 students.

Each teacher was given the opportunity to outline what their roles will be and newcomers to the School, Mrs Palmer (Head Teacher Science) and Miss Grimm (English) were welcomed.

Our very talented Year 11/12 Hospitality class prepared the wonderful salads and the barbecue was ably cooked by Dave Crelley.

Mrs Jackson and Mrs Crelley were very excited to hand out the "Welcome to Tumbarumba High School" bags which were filled with goodies generously supplied by Tumbarumba Newsagency and Tumbarumba IGA. These bags were quickly checked out by the Year 7 students.

New Additions

Two young steers have been donated to the school by David and Rachel Daniel. The school would like to thank their generosity.

Students and staff are very excited to be working with these animals during agricultural lessons and will be showing these animals at the local Tumbarumba Show to be held in March.

French Language Tour to New Caledonia Permission Note

New Caledonia here we come!

We are pleased to announce that we now have enough confirmed students with paid deposits for the New Caledonia Study Tour to go ahead in September. The booking has now been made and we are counting the days until we test our French ordering meals, shopping and getting around in Nouméa.

All participants now need to ensure that you have paid your full $300 deposit and returned your forms to school by Friday 3 February. If any French students still want to participate there is still time to sign up. The Deposit Note is available at Deposit Note (pdf, 311 KB), Alternatively feel free to contact me directly at the school.

All participating students will receive a letter shortly confirming their details. Please return this to avoid possible confusion arising later due to incorrect information, such as a data entry error in names for bookings or a variation of names on passports.

In the meantime, please encourage your son/daughter to use their French as much as possible. Like all learning, their future success depends on their current diligence. How competent they are in French in September depends on what they do now. There is no substitute for consistent hard work. Simple tricks to encourage your son/daughter to improve their French include things such as changing their mobile phone/iPod to French, encouraging them to listen to French music everyday or using French websites such as languages online http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/french/french.htm.

RHLC GATS Writing Day

Last Wednesday, four of our year 7 students – Bob DeAbel, Mollie Taylor, Celina Laing-Morales and India Masters – attended a writing day for Gifted and Talented students in Tumut. Nearly 60 stage 3 and 4 students from the Gundagai, Tumut, Batlow and Tumbarumba drawing areas attended, along with 16 teachers from a wide variety of schools and backgrounds.

Students were required to prepare a piece of writing, up to 800 words, prior to their attendance on the day. They were all given a photo of a street scene from the 1930's and allowed to use their imagination to create a story. On Wednesday, they participated in three workshops throughout the day: Atmosphere, Character Development and Plot Development. They were then given time to apply this newly gained information to their own stories.

Feedback suggests that our students gained a great deal from the day and would definitely attend if invited again. As always, our students were fantastic ambassadors for our school and made the most of this unique opportunity. I look forward to reading their next draft in the near future.

Girls Cricket Nail Biting Defeat

Rosewood Cricket Ground was the venue for girls One Day game between Billabong High School and Tumbarumba High School on Friday 1^st April.

In the ensuing 4 weeks leading up to this match, the team grew slowly. Putting into practices the new found skills they had learnt .

Paige Howlett and Emma Alomes were elected by the team to share the responsibilities of leading the girls in the days play.

After losing the toss and the girls were sent into the field, due to the time restraints put foward by the visiting side it was decided to play a 25 over match.

Tumbarumba HS held Billabong HS side to 5 for 106 by the end of the innings.

The early breakthrough brought about by a superb ball by Emily Waters and an equally impressive catch in first slip by Paige Howlett.

Billabong HS fought back from the early loss to put on a 53 partnership to steady the ship before strike bowler Amylea Lawson combined with safe hands of Jakoba Alomes behind the stumps to remove their other opener.

The following over brought about great fielding effort by the girls resulting in a great throw to the bowlers end to have Emma Alomes whip the bails off to end the wicket of another Billabong player.

The next wicket to fall had to wait till after the drinks break before Emily Waters brought about the end of another Billabong player.

The fifth wicket to fall came with the score at 80 from a catch by Emma Alomes with Emily Waters picking up her second wicket for the day.

Billabong HS put on another 26 runs to end their innings on 106, leaving the Tumbarumba HS girls and exciting target to chase.

Requiring just over 4 runs an over the girls came into early trouble with the early loss of Tamikah Hoffman with the team score at 10 and Emma Alomes a couple later with the team score at 16.

Amylea Lawson continued to plunder at the other end and combined with Paige Howlett to put on a suberb 56 run partnership until Paige held out just after the drinks break in an effort to lift the run rate with the score at 72.

Two more quick wickets fell with Jakoba missing the ball exposing the off stump and Emily Waters the very next ball to leave India Masters to block out the hatrick ball.

The girls continued to steadily edge closer to the target only to find themselves an agonizing one run short at the end of play.

The girls will have taken away a lot of the game and with a young side, the Tumbarumba HS girls cricket team has a very bright future.

Dance Workshops

Last week students from Tumbarumba High School and Primary School had the privilege of dancing with ‘So You Think You Can Dance' choreographer Aleeta Blackburn. It was a great experience, one which we will never forget. We all learnt so much and had so much fun!

Day 1 - 2^nd of March our journey started.

We had this day with the year 5 & 6's from Tumbarumba Primary School. By recess we had already put together a full routine which we are going to perform at the Tumbarumba Show to the song Blow by Kesha. We also learnt some signature moves such as the moon walk, break dancing steps, shuffling & G-slides. This was a great day to work together with the kids from the primary school & help mentor them.

Day 2 – 3^rd March

Today we all arrived full of anticipation and very excited to get started on our dance for the Riverina Dance Spectacular. By now we had already built up a world of respect for Aleeta and what she does. Senior girls rounded up 4 boys for our group; it was great to see them enjoy dancing. We started choreographing our routine to the song "On The Floor" by Jenifer Lopez & Pitbull which we all love! This day was jam packed!

Day 3- 4^th March

Today we completed our routine. We were all very excited about this and practiced it so many times! Our dance has a strong Spanish/Latin theme. Many components of dance are all in our routine. This was a great day yet a sad one as we didn't want to say goodbye to our Aleeta. We performed for the school at the end of the day, and everybody loved it!

Having learnt so much from Aleeta, we can't wait to have sore muscles from dancing with her again. We'd like to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Jackson for giving us the opportunity to dance with such an inspiring person! And also to the boys, Wade, Ben, Shannon, Dan, Mitch, Rayden and Bob who joined in and made the three days so much more enjoyable!!!

We are all looking forward to performing at the Tumbarumba show and will be rehearsing every week! Aleeta has inspired some of our senior girls to get dance lessons up & running for our community. Everyone, all ages more than welcome & details will be put into the newsletter in the next few weeks.

The Riverina Highlands Learning Community

Last Friday, the Principals from Batlow Technology School (Mr Deitz), Tumut High School (Mr Lange) and Gundagai High School (Mrs Miggins) and myself attended a meeting in Tumut to discuss the learning community created over the past two years. Mr Peter Brabin (School Education Director for Riverina East) was very interested in the progress we had made and positively commented on the direction we had taken.

There were three main topics discussed on the day – Teacher Professional Learning; Curriculum Sharing and the provision of GATS (Gifted and Talented) programs for our most talented students.

It is highly likely that the curriculum currently being offered across our schools will only expand over the next few years, as the very best teachers in our group of schools have the opportunity to join the program.

We also intend to roll-out more training for staff to gain skills in the production of a Moodle (an on-line learning medium which allows students to access their work away from school and upload completed work in a secure way). It is via this medium that the students undertaking Video Conferencing classes currently get their work.

However, it was the GATS proposal that attracted the most discussion and interest.

Statistically, across the Learning Community, it is our best students who often underperform in the HSC. It is with this in mind that we will be trialling a GATS program for Science and Mathematics in term 2 and English in term 3, for students from years 5, 6, 7 and 8 stretching from Gundagai in the north to Tumbarumba in the south. This will be an exciting program that we think will provide outstanding opportunities for our students in the Riverina Highlands Learning Community.

I would like to welcome all new staff and students to Tumbarumba HS in 2011. We have had a significant turnover of staff over the break and welcome the following people to our wonderful school.

Student Dress Requirements

In order to generate greater formality at our School Presentation Evenings, where student high achievement, perseverance and dedication are celebrated, we are insisting that all students who receive awards be in full school uniform this year.

Full school uniform includes a regular Tumbarumba High School polo shirt, grey trousers or shorts for boys (no football socks if wearing shorts) and navy slacks or navy/tartan skirt for girls. Enclosed appropriate footwear must also be worn.

Items excluded are: year based shirts or jumpers worn by year 10, 11 and 12; denim shorts, skirts or jeans; board shorts, short canvas shorts of various colours.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause; however, we will strictly enforce this advice in order to raise the bar at this most important and formal school occasion. The school executive view this evening as THE showcase evening in the school calendar, thus wish to create greater formality with the event to reinforce its significance to students, parents and the wider community. We value all of our students' achievements and efforts; yet only have the opportunity to recognise our highest achieving students once a year.

Welcome to our New Staff

It is with much pleasure that I am able to announce our new staff for 2011. Mrs Fiona Jackson has been appointed as our Deputy Principal for 2011. Mrs Jackson is currently a Head Teacher of TAS and comes to us from Barham High School in the Riverina's south west. Mr Paul Laing was successful in gaining the role of Head Teacher Teaching and Learning. Mr Laing is currently the Head Teacher of LOTE and he comes to us from Hornsby Girls High School in northern Sydney. We will also have a newly appointed teacher of Mathematics joining us from the beginning of 2011. Miss Sarah Cattle is a graduate teacher from West Wyalong who has been teaching at Wagga Wagga High School this year. We are very happy to have these teachers joining our team in 2011 and look forward to them assisting us to take our school forward and advancing Public Education in Tumbarumba.

Yr 11 Geo Excursion to Sydney

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION TO SYDNEY

On Wednesday 10 November the Year 11 Geography class went by bus to Sydney. On arrival, we checked into the Sydney YHA, which is next to Central Station and a great venue.

We caught a train to Milson's Point and walked back to the City over the Harbour Bridge. This is usually a great experience, but we got caught in a heavy storm and had to take shelter at the southern end of the Bridge.

We had a quick stop at the Museum of Contemporary Art, before going to Pitt Street Mall.

Dinner was in the Myers food court and then we explored Darling Harbour before going to the IMAX Theatre. We saw a film about the Hubble spacecraft in 3D. Some of the images of the galaxy were stunning. Afterwards we explored China Town.

The next day was our main day of field work. We met with students from Killara Boys and Sydney Secondary College at Customs House. The tour guide was from the Observatory Hill Field Study Centre. After a talk on the changing geography of Sydney, we caught a ferry to Darling Harbour.

We spent most of the day looking at the urban dynamics operating in Pyrmont. Pyrmont used to be a run-down derelict part of the city, with just 3000 residents. It now has about 17000 residents and 20000 jobs and has largely been rebuilt.

That evening we went to the movies at Bondi Junction. The celebrity spotters were out and Matt Byatt was the first to spot Braith Anasta in the audience.

On Friday we explored Redfern and Waterloo. We went close to the infamous "block" area of Redfern and the Housing Commission area at Waterloo. While the area has improved dramatically, we still found rubbish everywhere and doors with metal bars. Nearby the area is becoming gentrified.

We toured the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium. It was a very busy location. NSW was playing cricket against Victoria. We saw Michael Clarke get his century. We also saw the Blues warm up. Other than the cricketers, we saw Roosters and Swans players and a few Waratahs. We also got inside quite a few of the corporate boxes.

Coogee Beach is a great example of an urban village, but very different to China Town.

Then it was to the University of NSW for a tour. I think everyone was amazed at the size of the place.

That night we walked through Kings Cross before going to the Stables Theatre for a performance of "Angela's Kitchen", starring Paul Capsis. Afterwards we went to "Moonlight by the Rocks" which is live music and stalls at The Rocks.

On Saturday we went to Bondi Beach and walked to Tamarama Beach and return. Along the cliff face and on the beach were "Sculptures by the Sea". Some small ones were up for sale but Miss Amey didn't have the lazy $47,000.00 to make the purchase.

We went by public transport from Bondi to Parramatta. The travel distance is 30.1 km and took us 2 hours and forty minutes!!!! The return trip was on the river cat to Circular Quay, along the Parramatta River.

Dinner that night was in a food court in China Town, which was a challenge for those whose idea of a night out is to go to McDonalds. Then it was off to the Metro Theatre for a rock concert featuring 3 rock groups. The main act was Philadelphia Grand Jury.

Sunday morning we went to the Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst. A "Holocaust" survivor told us about how she escaped Nazi Germany.

The trip home from hot, sunny Sydney to a much cooler and very wet Tumbarumba.

Tumbarumba High School - Sundry Items for Tender

I hereby give notice that from Monday 22 November 2010, a large number of items will be offered for tender. Items include, but are not limited to, office furniture, steel filing cabinets, bookshelves and agricultural items. Some of these items include machinery that is not in working order.

The times to view the items will be Tuesday 23 November and Wednesday 24 November from 8 -8.45am and again on Tuesday 30 November 8 -8.45am. Those unable to attend during these times may be able to make an appointment.

The disposal of Department of Education and Training Assets requires a tender system to operate. Tenders will be made through the High School's Administration office. Tenders for all items will close at 3.00pm on Thursday 2nd of December 2010.

Gala Day 2010

Gala Day

On Wednesday, 27th of October, kindergarten to year 10 students from surrounding schools participated in a Commonwealth Games themed Gala Day at Tumbarumba High School. Students were divided into country groups for the day and given time in the morning to create posters and cheers. Each country got the opportunity to compete against other countries in modified sports including netball, rugby, softball, table tennis, hockey, lawn bowls and athletics. It was great to see the High School students assisting the little ones around the school and with their sports. Their efforts and behaviour was outstanding. The winning countries are yet to be announced. It was a fantastic day and enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day run smoothly and ensure its success.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

At last week's assembly Mistral Kendall-Hawk was presented with her Bronze Award.

Mistral was required to set and achieve objectives in the areas of Volunteering, Physical Activity, Skill Development and Expeditions.

Congratulations on an outstanding effort. Mistral is now aiming at the Gold Award.

Kokoda 2011

The twenty six students from Years 10 & 11 and their leaders have begun their training for their trip to Papua New Guinea next April. On Sunday afternoon they, and some parents and friends, walked a few of the smaller hills around the old rifle range site. The students will now be walking every weekend.

Industrial Tech - Projects 2010

On August 23 the external HSC markers attended Tumbarumba High School to mark the Industrial Technology - Timer Products and Furntiture Technology students' major projects.

Every student successfully completed their project and accompanying folio by the stipulated date.

As you can see by the images displayed, all the students should be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the year in producing pieces of work that will be of great value and use to them for many years to come.

State Athletics Carnvial

Cayden Wilesmith travelled to Sydney early September representing Tumbarumba High and the Riverina to compete in the State Athletics Carnival held at the Olympic Park in Homebush Bay.

Cayden was extremely pleased with his results. On the track Cayden completed the 200m sprint running a time of 23.83 seconds. While in the field events Cayden participated in high jump, jumping 1.60m. These are both Cayden's personal best records. This was a very pleasing result as other competitors are professionally coached and weather conditions were cold and wet for the track event.

Tumbarumba Debate Through Zone

DEBATING NEWS

A special congratulations is extended to Tumbarumba High School's Year 7-8 debating team – consisting of Cassie Lewis, Brigid Waters, Brittany Pholi and Michael Grady – which has won the Zone debating competition!

Tumbarumba won the zone final against Junee High School by a narrow margin last Monday. The topic was – "That team sport should be made compulsory at school." Tumbarumba argued the affirmative case and was able to present and support some very well reasoned arguments. Tumbarumba will debate Young High School's team in Week 1 of next term. We wish our team all the best in this inter-zone semi-final.
